39 Mercury
A friend had a 39 Mercury coupe when we were in high school in 1953. Talking to him recently and he said it was a hardtop. Said the guy he bought it from said there were only 500 built. Anyone know anything about that. I can't find anything with google. TIA

Re: 39 Mercury
They looked very much like one. Had chrome around the window frames and a very thin post inbetween the side windows and looked like a hardtop but wasn't. Their neat looking cars. ken ct.

Re: 39 Mercury
A friend of mine had one in 1955, he chopped the top and had a 6in. windshield, people would ask him how he could see out the windshield, he would say, take your ring off and hold it up to your eye and you can see enerything. It was a fun car to drive , 276, Lincoln trans, 354 gears, you could drive for weeks in 2nd gear. Walt

Is this what you're talking about? I found this pic on the web. I've never seen one before. Just a few pics here an there. Real sharp car though.

Re: 39 Mercury
The 39 and 40 Mercury bodies were the same. The 39 did not have vent windows, the hood and grill were different as was the dash and other trim items.
There were 7,970 1939 coupes and 15,107 1940 coupes built. Here is a photo of my 40

In my mispent youth, I owned a 40 Merc 4 door convertable. Loved that car. I put a 49 Merc motor in it. I could haul 10 girls in the car...

Re: 39 Mercury
I have seen only one 1939 Mercury coupe. It was at a Texas Tour in Marble Falls, Tx. In 1999. Haven't seen the car since. Charles

Re: 39 Mercury
There is a 39 Mercury Coupe on Fleepay currently. At least for a few more days. They look pretty similar in design to the 40 but a few styling changes were made. Remote control shift came a long in 40 along with several other updates mostly already mentioned. 1939 was a good year till war came to Europe. Styling pretty much turned to olive drab after the end of 41.

Re: 39 Mercury
My friend never raced it at Sanford, It never had good paint job, I think it was half primmer, he sold it and never knew what happened to it, I used to run at Sanford in 55 and the late 50's. Walt
