Just shove it up the hole before you install the plates.
Grease the ball well before installing the last plate.

Thank you for that information. The two half-shells for the ball were far too big, I think it is not a Model A-part. Therefore, someone has filled them with a lot of sealing paste.

Now, however, the new parts fits in correctly and the roadster now drives straight ahead better and the bad wriggling on rough roads is over.

But I have to ask again, please. When I mount the new shells without shim, the two screw ends protrude very far (3/8 inch) beyond the nut. If I put the shim in between, then the two spacers are not hard in between, there is still about <(1/8 inch) gap open.

Is that ok, or does the lower shell have to be pressed hard against the spacers and upper shell?

The bolt heads are most likely worn into the bell housing allowing to much

No, the threaded bolts are all right. The difference of the cause makes only the thickness of the ball.
