Noisy brakes
Hi. This 1930 Model A belongs to a friend. The front brakes have been noisy all time time he has owned it. It has modren lining and steal drums.and floaters. Adjusting did not help. lining and drums look good. Any ideas? |

Re: Noisy brakes
I've heard there is a spray you could put on the linings to try to stop the noise. If that fails, you may have to use woven linings. Make sure the wheel bearings aren't too loose, and the lug nuts are tight.

Re: Noisy brakes
Noise is vibration making itself known. What do think could be vibrating? Modern linings work better with cast drums, and steel drums like the woven type. The old steel drums could be out of round, or your pins (roller and adjusting wedge) and holes in the shoe could be oversize. They are supposed to be a snug fit to prevent the shoes from moving around.

Re: Noisy brakes
Dust makes for very slight but quick 'ON-OFF' of the brakes in the drums. Additionally hard linings squeal. Listen to Taxi cabs, they don't want to change pads/linings very often so these are very hard. A parts guy at NAPA may ask you about the service life you want. The opposite are Mercedes Benz, pads are so soft they make no noise. But cost a fortune.
I always ran Mintex in the SCCA race car. A 1959 A-H 100-6 with a 289 V-8 and T-10 trans, and four puck K-H discs up front and two puck K-H discs in the back. skip. |
