We're looking to swap out the trans in the '60. The 292 Yblock was gone through recently and would like something that gear wise will get down the highway a bit better.
Anybody have any suggestions or advice for an upgrade without having to break the bank? Thanks, Jerry |

What do you have in it now? My '56 had a 3spd in it, I swapped it for a toploader 4spd out of a '66 Comet that I had so I don't know how much one would cost. I replaced the original POS ford shifter with a Hurst. Haven't put enough miles on it to know what kind of mileage it'll get but it'll pull out pretty good behind the Yblock.

Well I do know there are some C-4 adapters along with an adapter for a T-5 swap . Trans Dapt and John Mummert has adapters for both . I also have seen one for an early AOD , the one without the computer shift . You have many good upgrades to replace what you have now !

If you have an auto. go with the AOD, adaptors are out there, if you have a manual the T-5 is the way to go. T-5 is what I have in my pickup. BSC in Costa Mesa advertises in Y-Block Mag for AOD conversions 949 722 1122 no website.

I used a T-5 from a mustang V-6 but put the S-10 tailshaft to move the floor shift forward away from the seat. Been driving it over a year and love it ! (1954 Sunliner)

Thanks for the help gang. Yes, mostly looking to get some highway mileage out of the upgrade. AOD is probably the route to take.
The car is actually an Edsel (my brothers). Yes, a very rare '60 Edsel wagon, and a hole in the floor really isn't an option. To all the purist, I promise ALL changes made to the car can be easily reversed and brought back to stock. |

Bendtsen has an AOD to Y block adapter, but they ain't cheap.

The more frugal option if your present transmission is OK is to change rear gears,since it is a 9" those are usually fairly inexpensive as the racers usually swap them out to get a stouter gear,a 3.00 is not hard to find.

I have an AOD in my '59 Edsel, and it made a huge different to the performance of the car. Having the overdrive is awesome. Get yourself a Lokar tv cable, and you'll need to build some kind of Trans crossmember. Other than that it's easy. |

I have an FMX behind a 292 in a 54 Sunliner A simple conversion and still a basic stock car. Don't know if this is what you are looking for but runs great in my car. Gerry

I had forgotten all about the FMX . That was a far better trans than people would give credit for . Very strong too . Well why not a 3 speed w/overdrive or even a good rebuilt Ford O Matic ? There are endless transmissions that can be bolted up to your Y block . You can even get a Chevy trans to bolt up if you are that crazy !
Now I am a die hard Ford guy so please don't throw anything at me for saying something about bolting Chevy trans to a Ford engine I was just explaining all the options . Personally I would either go with a C4 because they are easy to find , cheap and very durable or an AOD for the overdrive . If you don't really need the overdrive then go with the C4 ! Jim |
