Default Fluid Exchange on my Mile-O-Matic

The pan gasket on my Edsel's Mile-O-Matic is leaking, so I'm planning on doing a fluid exchange and gasket replacement. I am wondering if this could be a potentially harmful job considering I've heard stories of worn transmissions losing all their friction from the fluid being changed with some fresh stuff. Any insight? I have never touched the tranny and have no history as to what been done to the car in the past. I'd be going into this blindly.

If you put the correct fluid back in, it will be fine. For a complete change, turn the flywheel untill the converter plug is on the bottom, and drain that too.

I read that in my maintenance manual too, I'll be sure to do that.
