Default 1933 Phaeton . . . it finally happened :)

I had posted a little while ago about wanting a Phaeton . I had found a nice 36 Phaeton I was considering and then I heard about a 33 Phaeton that may be for sale . A month ago at our V8 Club swap meet a friend of mine said hey Mike, I sent a guy your way that mentioned he wanted to sell a older restored 33 Phaeton . I said great , how do I get a hold of him ( of course trying to hold back my excitement ). He said I don't know , I just told him where your spot was so I though he would find you . Well , our swap meet was big and I was all over the place so no one found me . I told my friend , c'mon , you can't do that to me , any info at all ?? He said I think the persons name was xxxxxx , and he owned a junk yard in xxxxxxxx . That was all I had and my search began . I was able to track down the owner and gave him a call .He was impressed my stalking skills . I told him hey , it's a 33 Phaeton , I had to !! The car was his fathers car who had lost interest in old Fords a while ago. His son was the keeper of the car and he unfortunately is to busy to do anything with it . They both decided they should sell it . They had owned the car since 1973 .We went and took a look at it and fell in love . I was ablt to beg ,barrow and beg some more and we went and picked it up yesterday . It is a nice old car . Very solid . It has some neat options like 17" Bent Spoke wheels ,Dual temp gauge, Chex amp/oil gauge ,Dunford Firewall tool box , Emergency lever extension handle and a clock mirror(no Ford logo) The car was painted in the late 60's or early 70's . The paint looks ok in pic's and will be a good driver paint job . So far so good, things are only getting better the more I dig . I am not a big fan of the detroit lubricator carbs so I am looking for a 34 manifold and I have a good 94 or 97 carb for it .The DL just seems a little fussy . The top needs a good scrubbing , suggestions ?? Enjoy the pics . We are very excited to have this car now and she will be in the family for a long time .
I just need to add a huge THANK YOU to my wife for putting up with all this non-sense and supporting my hobby !!!!!!! I swear every other word out of my mouth was Phaeton for about the last month !! Ha Ha !!

I don't care what anyone says, I've always admired the '33 more than the '34. I'm very jealous!

A request: Can you please post detail pictures of the Dunford box? I'm sure lots of guys would like precise dimensions to make their own tool box also.

Persistence pays off. Things do not just drop into your lap, you have to go out and find them.

Well done on the purchase, She's a beaut.

Beautiful! Very nice woodgraining on the dash.

side-bar question: is phaeton a two syllable word(fay-ton) or three(fay-a-ton)?
Always been curious, just never asked.

Congrats! What a beautiful car!
A question though, I don't know the difference between a '33 and a '34, how can I quickly identify each year? Thanks for your help, I'm really enjoying this forum, and learning a lot.

Wow!! What a beauty! I personally think the '33 and '34 models are the classiest looking cars of the entire early Ford V-8 era. I usually fall in love with most every one I look at and dream about owning many that I see that are forsale.
I'm hoping you are a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club and will be bringing that '33 to some of the upcoming national meets so we can get a close-up look-see at that beautiful car.

The '33 grille is narrower on the top, and the '33 has one hood handle, vs. the '34, which has two. There are also differences in the shock mounts, etc.

The grill on a 33 is flatter and the 34 comes out to more of a point. The hood on the 33 has curved louvers and a single latch handle in the middle. I have some of both and it takes a while to get to know the differance until they get side by side. After a while the differances jump right out at you. G.M.

Thank everyone . She is going to be a fun car . The pics makes it look a little nice than it is as far as the body . It is good and solid with no rust any where but it looks like the doors had some mediocre bodywork done in the early 70's . We will fix that someday but for now Drive Drive Drive !!!!

Here are more pics . The car has a lot of accessories . I guess the previous owner liked accessories . I believe this car was bought at the 1973 V8 Club National meet in San Diego . I will try and find out some more history on it for the fun of it .
Here are pics of the Dunford box . If anyone needs dimensions or more info just PM me . It is pretty neat !

It has an original 3.54 Rear end

A six blade fan that according to the book was a 33/34 accessory

The accessory gauges. One ford authorized and the other was not .

Yes, I have the original top boot. It is on the car, in the pictures. It was in a "relic" condition, so I sewed it up a little and contact-cemented canvas to the back side. I also have the original curtains, in their original pouch.

Phaeton is pronounced as a two syllable word, Phae- ton (Fay-ton)

Phaeton is from the Greek language.

Phaeton was the son of Helios (the personification of the sun)

Phaeton also appears in the Greek language as a play written by one of the greastest playwrites in ancient history, Euripides.

In the modern era the name Phaeton was given to a style of horse drawn carriage which had four wheels. Later the name was attached to an open top automobile.

Again, congratulations on your new car. Personally I like them to have a lived in look, with age they acquire an honesty that cannot easily be faked, if she were mine I wouldn't change a thing, and thank you for the photos.

Brubacker,

The word is usually pronounced with three syllables. 'Phay eh ton' or something similar.

The automotive usage is derived from a particular horse drawn configuration; a light high wheeled carriage. That in turn was derived from the name of a Greek God.

Today it is taken to mean a four door vehicle with folding top and side curtains. Ford's last one was 1938 I believe.

Regards

Henry

1932 V/8 I have a 33 phaeton also. I installed a 3:78 with a Columbia and it runs along the road very well. I may have some pictures of the Columbia and the controls if your interested. G.M.
