Default Seeking Turn Signal Advice

Turn Signal Advice

Ok, let me have it... My '30 Town Sedan needs turn signals. I have 6v pos. ground, and just bought a NOS Wagner 535 flasher. I'm looking and on the precipice of buying a bunch of stuff. I don't want to get it all wrong. Mike's has a bumper flasher. I've read on LED's, but you have to add resistors to get 'em to flash at the right speed. My car's pretty original (one tail light, etc), so I'm ok with putting on traditional incandescent bulbs from Mike's. IMHO, LED's take away the mystique of the ol' lady. That being said, can someone(s) advise me on what else I need? He sells a turn lever thingy too. ~Chuck

You don't NEED resistors, you just need the correct flasher for LED's.

Since all you have is a $7.00 flasher, I would get a complete kit from one of the vendors. Simple, and easy.

Thanks Mike, I had examined that kit, but again, I don't like the LED look (too modern) on the Ol' Lady. I looked at this other one that is not LED:
http://www.mikes-afordable.com/product/A13310A.html
It is 1/3 the price also (nice, but not a deal breaker). So for me, I am not sold on LED's, even though they are brighter.

Yes, I am picky, and I DID ask for advice. So thanks for the input.

Also, I was gonna combine that kit with these bumper flashers:

Do you think these would work together?

Not really, you need to add the 4 - 21.00 lights and purchase the additional wire and connectors to the 63.00 kit and you are right up there.

No matter what you choose it will work.

Thanks. I will give it some thought, and then throw my money at it.

Henry, I know what you mean by wanting to keep it stock looking. I still have only one tail light also (altho I did add a detachable 'Center Brake Light' that rides on top of my spare tire).

I see the "Old Lady" has cowl lights. I've seen a kit to convert your cowl lights to turn indicator lights so as you don't have 'Non-stock' appearing lights hanging off the front of your bumper.

Another option is to put turn indicator lights inside your headlight buckets.

I haven't decided yet what options I have for the rear.

I plan to use a Double Pole, Double Throw (ON-OFF-ON) instead of the big a$$ switch they hang on the steering column.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks Y-Blockhead, I like the idea of the DPDT ON-OFF-ON switch. So I just bought one on EBay (heavy duty, 6 terminal) for $4.49 free shipping. I was almost going to pay $63 for a big honkin' switch for the steering column.
[I know that kit would have been wired for the cowl lights, but I don't know if oncoming drivers are ready for a cowl-height turn signal without an amber light].
So I'm breaking my own rule and putting bumper amber lights on front and rear. After all, there are no STOCK turn signals for a 1930, ANYWAY!

Shoot, these days I doubt drivers know what hand signals mean. Most of the time when I use hand signals, somebody waves at me.

Shoot, here in New Mexico, they don't use turn signals anyway, much less do they know what a hand signal is... and a stop sign is just a suggestion.

I got my complete kit from Sacramento Vintage and couldn't be happier with it. It's a Signalstat 900 that has been modified and all the wiring for a Model A.

I use the $20 signal Stat knockoff from Gaslight Garage, coupled with the LEDs which replace the entire guts of my 68C taillight and are about as bright as my new Mustang's taillites. I also have a THIRD BRAKE LIGHT on my luggage rack and my front turn signals are wired to my cowl sights and I use Dual Lamps in my headlights for parking lights and for night parades since they shine bright though no beam from the #1004 or whatever they are. My Cowl Lamp turn signals have the high output 6 Volt bulbs and my Heavy Duty flasher works perfectly.
The photo shows the third bake light and LED showing left turn.

Carl, I just looked up the Signalstat 900 on EBay and other info, including wiring chart. I am studying this and may use it. Thanks for the tip. Chuck - aka Henry's Lady's Man

This may help if you want to do it from scratch. If you are using a three wire flasher the "P" is the pilot light for in the cab.

That looks pretty easy. Here's one I've been looking at:

That would use the Mikes 63.00 switch and would use two filament bulbs in the rear, of which you only have one.
