Default New Coil in Script Can

I’ve been told and have read this can be done. I’d like to see some photos of how to do this. I have a script reproduction which failed. I took it apart and tried to insert a new coil. It enters the lip that held the backlit top but will not enter the can. Are original coils slightly larger in diameter?

KenBolton: when you gutted the aftermarket script coil, did you end up with one layer of metal or two. I tried the same thing last summer and was unable to separate the two layers of metal, which made the ID too small to fit over a newer standard style coil.

At the Hamilton MARC meet, I picked up an original/OEM script coil which I also gutted. Unfortunately, it was still too small to fit over a newer standard style coil even thou it had only one layer a metal.

Five years ago, I did the exact same thing with an original/OEM script coil and it DID fit over a Pertronix epoxy coil. Maybe I was just lucky!!!!

Were all the "original/OEM script coils" made by the same manufacturer?

No. Autolite, Bosch, Essex, and Standard were the most popular manufacturers for Ford.

There was a shorter metal layer inside the can. It pulled right out with needle nose pliers. I do have an original script coil that is still good so hate to tear it apart. Can anyone answer my question of whether the original can diameter is larger than the repos?

Can you not just measure your "original script coil"?

I think he means the internal diameter.

I too would like more information on gutting an original coil to install an aftermarket coil in the body. Any pictures or "How To Do" would be greatly appreciated before I begin this project.

Thanks,

John

Would have helped if the PO had said ID or OD.
