Remove the head and do it properly don't fudge it up then you will really be locking for help. Heli coil is a good repair, there are others as well.

Ditto on pull the head and do it right. It's not the dia. of the bolt that presents the problem it's the different thread count.

Re: head bolt replacement with a12mm
Brad, I'm assuming you have a flathead. Personally, I'm not going to give you advice that condones jury-rigging. I'd pull the head, and put a heli-coil in the problem hole. I wouldn't think it would take more than a few hours to do and you could rest comfortably knowing that you did it right. Head bolts/studs go through a lot and they're not something to try to cut corners on.

Re: head bolt replacement with a12mm
Once beyond all the 'right' fixes, go search the archives for Ron's comments. You won't be the first to use the metric fastener, or even a 1/2-13. I'm not offering a recommendation, all I'm saying is, it has been done, and it works. It's just an old Ford, originally serviced with a monkey wrench and a hammer. You aren't working on a 'concourse' car are you? (JMHO)

Re: head bolt replacement with a12mm
Bob. I totally respect all of Ron's responses...I really do. A guy could drive an old railroad spike in that stud bolt hole and would probably be fine. Doesn't mean it's the right way to solve the problem. It's an easy problem to solve and doesn't take that much time to do it right....and not expensive at all. Fix it right and be done with it!
