40 Rear Brake Backing Plate
The retainer thats welded to the backing plate holds the long flat brake shoe retainer spring is broke on my 40 Sedan. Is there a repair kit for the spring retainer or will I need to find a backing plate. What are my options.
It’s the right rear. Thanks Dave |

Here’s the pictures, the small tab that bend over the spring broke on one side. Wire wheel caught it when cleaning.

You can see the left tab that broke off, the clean shiny spot.

Looks pretty rusted to tig back in. Spring parts are not very receptive to welding either. If you can find another one it's not a bad idea for brakes. Roy probably has some, along with others. http://fordscript.com/ . . Last edited by Tinker; 01-23-2019 at 10:21 PM. |

Re: 40 Rear Brake Backing Plate
It’s not actually the spring , it’s the bracket that holds the spring. I’ve already bought the Boling Brothers MT Lincoln front brake kit. Rather than invest in these any further I think I’ll bite the bullet and buy the rear Lincoln kit also.
Could have saved myself some money if I knew I was going to run into this, I had already found and bought 1940 rear wheel cylinders Made in the USA by Wagner. |

Hind-site is 20/20... Sounds like a plan!

Re: 40 Rear Brake Backing Plate
Try welding it first. As a point of information, that piece is an anti rattle spring clip into which the brake shoe fits and prevents the shoe from literally "rattling" around. It's not an attachment point for another spring. That could be welded back on and still work fine.It might also be possible to use an iron rivet or a large pop rivet to reattach it. Or, you could make a rivet from a nail. You could also make or use a new style clip as found on the backside of a tape measure or similar device. Also, remember the old style metal banding straps that were spring steel?

Thanks for the information. From looking at othe picture For actually eliminated the long flat spring that broke off beginning in 42.

Re: 40 Rear Brake Backing Plate
I’ve finally figured out the spring in question is a emergency brake arm guide spring. I don’t see how it really does much at all and not sure if it’s even needed.
Picture I found doing a search below shows the spring near the ball pean hammer . |

Re: 40 Rear Brake Backing Plate
You can weld a z shaped clip to fix it. Replacement parts not available.

Re: 40 Rear Brake Backing Plate
I believe your correct, I see no reason for it to be spring steel because the most it does is works as a guide. It very flimsy and doesn’t really do much that I can see. I’ll let the next fella worry about it. I’m selling the fronts and rears and installing self energizing Lincoln style on the 40 made by Boling Brothers.
