Preparing a dash panel for plating
I have a 31 dash panel that I would like to get plated. It is in very good condition but does have some light rust spots. I would like to prepare the grooved portion of the panel for plating myself. It will be tedious job and the chrome shop most likely won't take the time to do it correctly. I don't want the chrome shop to grind away any of the detail. How should I go about doing this. What tools and materials should I use to prepare the surface. Thanks for your help. ED

Re: Preparing a dash panel for plating
Is your panel an original or reproduction? You will need to strip the plating and remove rust and buff out any obvious imperfections before it is replaced.

Re: Preparing a dash panel for plating
Remember to have the shop do the final polishing, otherwise it is not their fault in there is an imperfection in the plating.

Don Turley should chime in here. He's the expert.

Re: Preparing a dash panel for plating
If you have a plater near you, take it to him and it will only take about ten min. to dip it and remove all the old plating.. This plater knows all about show cars in the Model A area.. He did ALL the plating for Doc. Ks, cars, which always won the highest awards at MARC & MAFCA National shows.. Terry Metz, Brillion, Wisc. Phone #920-756-3284

Re: Preparing a dash panel for plating
Are there any small platers left in Maine at all??? I've hauled some stuff into a couple of commercial platers up there, but it was all industrial, mostly for manufacturing and hydraulics. If you don't need a forklift to unload it it's not in their line of work.

Re: Preparing a dash panel for plating
If we don't go to war with Canada you might find good platers north of the border.
