Default Tighten Rear Axle Nut

I drilled a 5/8" hole in my brake adjusting board to keep the hub from spinning when I tightened the axle nut.

Thats a good idea especially since I'm one that uses an adjustment board.

I thought it was "all you could get on the wrench and one more round .."

That was a saying often made as a joke in a Model A club that I used to know a few members. I remember a story told to me about a newbie restorer in that club who took that joke literally.

He tightened the axle nut as tight as he could get it with a big wrench, marked the position, and then proceeded to strike the wrench handle with a sledge hammer until the nut rotated "one more round .."

... and stripped the threads !!!

(LOL)

Emergency Brake?? Locks up the drum!

I start at 125 foot pounds, back off 10 or add 10 to align key.

Great idea; thanks.
I imagine you could put that board on the other side of the drum to use it for loosening/removing the axle nut, correct?

Yes you could ,but the transmission has to be in gear ,not neutral,

I see torque of 125 in other post. I only went to 100, hope that was
Enough , I drove last year like that.

Why does it have to be in gear

I've tightened as much as 125# once . If there is any question about the over 80 year old threads, I stop at 75 # . I've never had a problem with the axle nut at 75 #

[QUOTE=Mitch//pa;1027084]Why does it have to be in gear

Just thought if the opisite back wheel was on the ground , in
Neutral the trans would not lock up,and wheel would still turn.

I'm possibly wrong here.

It seems to me that the adjustment board is being used to hold the hub from turning.

I get it as tight as I can with my 24" breaker bar. I had an axle break once, probably because the nut wasn't tight enough and let the drum work back and forth for many miles.
