Re: Rebuilding Early FORD V8 Distributor
Yes, it was very good. I know how hard it is to make a video so to get that put together must have taken a lot of work.
It didn't mention how hard it can be to get the side plates out, though. I also thought the surface finish on the edge of the brake disc was a bit sketchy. I'm pretty sure that would chew up the leather pad in time. Inspection of the rotor and shaft for signs of tracking would have also been a good tip, and using shrink tube to add insulation to the necked down part of the shaft. Not sure how helpful all the part numbers are. It's not like you can go and get a new stop screw from the local Ford dealer when it gets lost under the bench. It's good that this stuff is out there, though. Slick work getting your link in there, Jim. Sorry if this sounds like I'm slagging the video, I'm not. For what it is, it's very good. It's just that there is more to it than what was shown. I could do a version, but it would have dirty old parts and poor audio. Mart. Last edited by Mart; 11-04-2019 at 04:49 PM. |

Re: Rebuilding Early FORD V8 Distributor
Yes, a very good video but there is more to a rebuild than what was shown. For instance no lubrication inside the distributer was shown. You cant put it together DRY like that. Different lube required on various components. No mention of aligning the contacts or testing the rotor or coil. No condenser ??? Back in the day I rebuilt dozens of these distributers and never did fit any shrink sleeving or other insulation on the shaft under the rotor, but I do it now. Otherwise a good video. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Rebuilding Early FORD V8 Distributor
Pluses and minuses; good for someone who hasn't tackled one previously, but it would have been nice if they correctly identified the distributor at the beginning. It is a 78 (actually later than '37 given the housing) distributor, not a 68.

Re: Rebuilding Early FORD V8 Distributor
It’s nice to finally see someone complete a how to video, while there are things I would say or do differently that are so minor it wouldn’t matter...... well done. A lot of time was taken to make that and is a good crash course for the first timer to watch

Re: Rebuilding Early FORD V8 Distributor
I certainly agree with the pluses on this fine video. It is most informative for a first time builder. My preference as far as the bushing goes is to maintain a max of .001 clearance between the big diameter on the rotor shaft and bushing. In all but a few cases the big diameter on the rotor shaft is worn out of round and usually tapered at least .002. Yep I turn the big diam to 100% cleanup and install an undersize bushing in the housing.......I bore the bushing to fit the now straight and round rotor shaft big
dia. A side note here when I bore the bushing to size especially on crab distributors it is quite amazing how far off the concentricity is.. Charlie ny Last edited by Charlie ny; 11-05-2019 at 02:07 AM. Reason: remove 2nd ref to crab dists |

Good deal Charlie!! You always seem do those little extra things to your distributor, carburator, and fuel pump rebuids that mean so much for the quality and reliability of your rebuilds.
