Thank you for the input, guys. We are still scratching our heads. I'm kinda on the side with you guys who think it is a way to warm the oil. But, not sure. It's a good conversation starter at the shop.

Sure looks like the part of a heater that picks up heat an transfers it to the interior of the car.

Chief used a pan of HOT coals, to warm the MOLASSES like oil. AND, hot water to free the frozen brakes. (I HATE COLD!!)----Thet's why I live in CALEDORNIA!

I can remember a 2 cylinder Murphy diesel that had fittings plumbed into the pan like that.It was on a sawmill.You would drive up to it with a truck,then hook a couple of hoses from the truck to the pan fittings.In about 1/2 hour you could spin the engine right over.The guys would sharpen the saw,reset it,get the rest of the machines started,actually sawing was the last part of morning setup.They had hoses on the skidders too,but they usually just built fires under them.
