Default 60HP V-8 into a 28 roadster

I have a friend (who does not use a computer) who is going to put a 60HP Ford V-8 into a 28 ford roadster. He would like to know the does and don'ts and any suggestions. Thank you Bruce.

I'm thinking of the same thing. I have a T-5 and I guess you can get a set up that will work. The flywheel is a later type.

Is there a reason that your friend wants to go from a 200 cubic inch engine to one that is 136 cubic inches (you can't beat cubic inches)? Does he find himself driving too fast? Does the Model A produce too much torque for him (the 60HP will produce a lot less)? Will his insurance company increase his rates when he increases the horsepower even if the car will be slower? Some of my comments may be mitigated if he spends a lot of money on speed equipment. Have you checked the archives here, on HAMB and on AHOOGA about this topic?

We had a man in our Model A club put a V-8-60 in his coupe several years ago. He could not keep up with the original 40 HP Model A's on club tour's here in the mountains. Needless to say the 60 was pulled out and sold in about two weeks. It did look good in the engine compartment, almost factory, but had no real power on the road. This was an expensive, time consuming, mega fabrication required project that proved worthless.

Keep in mind that the 4 banger has more torque at lower rpm's. The V/8 60 needs more rpm's to develope it's torque. Usually the rearend is a 3.78 ratio, when using a V/8 60 your would be wise to install a 4.11 ratio.

I love my V-8 60 in my 37 Tudor. It always draws an admiring crowd at the local drive in and at car shows.

The stock rear end is 4:44, and in the flatlands here in the Ca Bay Area, it gets around just fine.

If I need to travel at a higher top speed, I drive my 38 Coupe with the 85.

We used to have a 39 with the 60, nice original car, in the first week of owning it there was a parade on the Atlantic City boardwalk, a model A will chug up the ramp in any gear, the 39 with the 60 took 3 - 4 tries in 1st gear, finally made it with a 1 block run flat out and just made it ---that same car would do 75 on the parkway with it's 444 rear ---so if you are going to use the 60 plan your gearing --when you want the "A" engine under 2500 rpm ----and it will go anywhere at 1500 rpm ---the 60 will want to be over 3500 rpm ---i had been afraid to run up the rpm of the 60 till I talked to a hydroplane racer, he said that 7000 rpm was good for more than 1 season, 7500 rpm was good for much less than 1 season ---after that I drove the 60 using rpm to do the work, and let the slow torque do the work in the stock A

60 hp --60hp @ 4200 rpm, 94 ft lbs @ 2500 rpm

with the "A" it is like 120 ft lbs at 1200 rpm and the 40 hp at 2000

I would think that if you had a 4-5 speed trans, and at least a 4:11 ratio it could be fun running the 60 hard and fast ----but a slightly modified A with overdrive will still be hard to outrun.
