Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
Another up date .
Put the distributor and old plug wires back on the engine today. Sprayed some carb cleaner in the carb and hit the starter. WOW dont sound real bad running. I ran it on a bottle propane for a few minutes and the blow by was pretty bad but seemed to get better as we went. Plans are to send Carb to Ken ( he volunteered) after we run some and change oil etc. I have used some stuff from the "kroil" folks called "kreen" in the past and it seemed to clear up some internal issues etc. Will let ya know as we go..........still fighting this cold???? |

Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
A little work today, Doug stopped by and the sun was shinning so i popped the fuel pump stand off for a "cuda" bath. Man what a nasty part !!!
Looks like the pump will actually work ( i put my finger over the suction side when running the other day and felt negative pressure) . Our no-budjet approach will allow us to clean these parts up , check them over and run them for sure. Just for the sake of future judging specs , does anyone know where i can get a factory rag and string ( wrapped around breather tube )???? Ken you got one ?? |

Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
This car makes me smile everytime i touch it !!! The plug wires held in location with string and the small pieces of hose protecting them. Then the rags wrapped around the breather tube and now the repaired fuel pump rod got me this morning.
Check this out and expound with your thoughts. I love a simple plan !!!! |

Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
I can remember as a young person in the 50's where you did whatever had to be done CHEAP to keep a car going. My dad had a '41 Mercury that the wiper motor wouldn't quite click over for the return trip accross the windshield and he hung a large nut on a string onto one of the rods that went from the motor to the wiper transmission and the weight of the nut hanging on the rod would cause the rod to move just enough further to trip it back accross the glass. It was funny to see the wipers working like a clock and the nut swinging on the string below the dash.

Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
could be he had the short push rod and need the longer one? As far as NOS rags on old Fords-the best one I ever saw was a diaper stuffed into the oil filter and boy did the old Flatty fill it up-must have weighed ten pounds!

Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
After a good cleaning i removed the glass bowl and cleaned with sno-bowl drain cleaner. Reassembled with a bit of clear silicone on the cork gasket and performed a bench test . WOW pumps fuel like it should out of a gas can, do ya figure a squirt across the shop is good for 3 psi ?????

Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
Put the pump back on the engine today ( after cleaning and a bench test) and started the engine on the fuel pump and carb on car ( carb will be sent to Ken for a redo, thanks Ken) Pretty amazing the engine sounds pretty good ( poor video on my end) with both manafolds broken and pipes missing etc. Vac gauge is steady ( again amazing ) blow by has got better as engine warms up etc,and you can hear the valve train just humming away.
Tomorrow we will drain the oil and install some rotella and "kreen" a cleaner from aero kroil to see if we can help the blow by. Pretty amazing old engine so far with NO red flags seen as of yet!!!! |

Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
Oh it is worth it when it's done. Our 39 was the first old ford and we like it the best of all of them. The only thing that I changed was that d-m distribitor, it's got a Mallory now, sorry Bubba.
