"So hot" is meaningless, how hot is it actually getting?

There are a couple of large resistors mounted under the regulator that can generate heat. Make sure some air can get to the resistors, so the heat does not build up.

I burnt up a couple regulators till I found there was a bad path (ground) back to the battery. It's a good practice to occasionally clean up wire terminal and body bolt connections to keep things working properly.
