53 Truck V8 Oil Vol.
I have restored a 53 flathead V8 for my 50 truck. I was told it is a truck V8. On filling with 5 qts. oil (what the manual says it takes without filter), it is about 1 1/2 qts. too high. I have the dip-stick from my 50 truck engine and it is the same in terms of full level. My original dip-stick also has two marks(each representing about an additional qt. above full) above the full level, the first with an "M" next to it and the upper just a notch in the dip-stick. I am wondering if I may have a car V8 which takes a qt. less. However this does not make sense because the dip-sticks are the same. I do not want to operate it "over filled" but certainly not "under" either. Can anyone out there give me the dimensions on the truck oil pan or any other advise on this issue? Thanks.

Re: 53 Truck V8 Oil Vol.
every service and repair manual says that, but add 5 qts and you get that result, one qt over full on dip stick, 4 qts fills the pan, it has to be a misprint from ford and every one just coppied and used that

5 qts is correct, assuming you change the filter.

Re: 53 Truck V8 Oil Vol.
I love the answer. I have an original Operator's Manual dated March 9, 1949 and it says the 239 V8 is 5 qts. and 6 qts with new filter. So this was incorrect. Very strange. Thank you both for the quick response. That is the only answer that really makes sense due to the two dip-sticks being the same. So the cars and trucks are not different. If anyone out there has a truck oil pan I would love to get the dimensions just to seal this answer in bailing wire. Thanks again.

Re: 53 Truck V8 Oil Vol.
I just changed oil my motor. It is an EAB engine with Merc oil pan. 5 qts came up to a half qt below Full, after running and sitting overnight (filter had time to drain down). Most of that 1/2 qt is undoubtedly still in the bottom half of the filter (below the drain hole in the center tube).

Re: 53 Truck V8 Oil Vol.
I am very interested in the answer. I have an 8rt engine out of a truck and the dip stick says full with 4 quarts in the pan. With the filter it takes 5 quarts.
