Default steering box upgrades on a 35 pu with ford parts ?

not mine, asking for a friend who has not registered yet even with my pestering. deal is, he bought a 35 pu project and has no steering box at all, so, my thoughts are since the 35 is still parallel drag link, can it be switched to the later rolling sector cross steer style, for better steering, if so, whats needed, how to, etc. also, that steering shaft must be shorter than a car unit? any ideas?, thanks, skip

1937-1939 Ford steering box is a major improvement. Use the 1935 mount, or modify the later mount. Pickup will have the same box but different steering shaft.

The 34 PU had a parallel to frame drag link, 35 has drag link that crosses under oil pan next to the tie rod. I've never been too successful at bolting up the later '37-'39 steering boxes to the earlier '35-'36 mounting plate that's riveted to frame. When we change to the '37-'41 steering box mounting plate, everything bolts up nearly as original. Big improvement in steering with the rolling sector steering box over the earlier fixed sector design.

The 37-39 steering box upgrade is what I plan to do on my ‘36. I’ve seen the 37-41 box mounts come up for sale or on the big auction site once in a while..

I think you can buy an adapter to install a Spicer 535 box in the 35. I put one in ny 47 PU with cross steering a few years back, and it works great. I then uo graded it to a 605 PS unit and that works even better.

As I recall, the pre 41 pickups are basically a car chassis with a utility body.

I converted my '36 to a '40 steering gear box using a '39-40 frame mount and a '40 pitman arm. #21-A3590-3 015.. My steering column is a '40 with column shift.. The whole affair was basically a bolt in deal... Works almost like power steering compared to the original '36 worm and sector.
Several years ago I converted my brothers '36 pickup to hydraulic brakes using a complete '41 front axle assembly, including the front spring, '40 steering gears on a '40 mount with a '40 truck steering column, floor shift.

Ron, or anybody, do you have any pics or more info on these spicer boxes? What do they come from? Box in my 47 is very worn, and I don't need stock setup.
