Default Gas splashing out of filler neck while driving

Hi everyone. Stupid question.

1942 ford truck, gas splashes out of the filler neck when driving, pretty much only when I take a left turn or the right side of the truck dips lower than the left.

I did add an extra layer of gasket material on the cap which cut the spillage way back, but I still get a little bit coming out. Will a new cap solve this issue? It has an original style non-vented cap, which could even be the original (who knows).

I keep the tank no more than half full.

Otherwise wondering if anyone makes a device to put into the filler neck like modern cars have with a steel trap door.

Thanks in advance.

Try a new cap.

I had that problem with my 36 and found a plastic piece that had the flipper door in it that is the size of an unleaded spout. I had to whittle the piece down to fit into the neck and bent some heavy stainless wire/rod to make a sort of spring to hold it inside the neck. It has helped a lot and could prolly be sealed a bit better to essentially stop the splashout.
A good sealing cap is also worth getting

I fitted one of those 'trapdoors' out of a jap car into my filler neck...considerably cuts down on the spillage

How is the gas tank vented, if the cap isn't? I'm not familiar with the earlier trucks, but 48-on are all vented.

Those of you who added the flipper-door, do you know what vehicles they came out of?

Dunno...I've done this several times in old Fords, I just go to a wrecking yard and check out various Jap cars until I find one that'll work. Buy the filler neck, take it home, remove the trapdoor- requires minor surgery lol, and fit into the Fords filler neck.

Don't over fill the tank, leave some room esp in the heat when gas expands. Other thing, lots of roads have high crowns, I have run into the gas coming out if the truck sits at to much of an angle, with the filler side on the low side with a full tank.

Hi fellows; Just a note; 40 yrs ago I had a serious Motorcycle crash due to a gas spill on a corner.. looked like water... acted like ice. I quit riding forever, couldn't trust the road. Newc

I understand completely. I was a little luckier. About 8 years ago, I got my bike out of winter storage, changed the oil, installed the battery and got it going. One trip around the parking lot, and a little voice in my head said, "Nope, not no more". I sold the bike the next day and haven't looked back.

I hope you suffered no permanent injury.

Interestingly, I’ve been a vintage bike guy since I was 15, so almost 30 years now. This truck is my first real hands on at vintage cars, although I was a factory trained Chevy mechanic for a few years. Being a paramedic was easier so I switched to that and never looked back haha.

Tanks makes a fuel cap that has a vent with a ball in it to prevent the gas from coming out. I have one on my 32. It looks like a stock cap. Also has a rubber seal instead of paper.

That's neat; a Ford Barn guy's magazine article from the past resurrected to help with a new thread on the Barn.
