Default Radiator expansion tank

The rad on my 53 v8 has an aftermarket plastic expansion bottle connected to the overflow pipe. I managed to loose the cap for it today😕 Thinking of either removing the bottle or perhaps fitting something neater. What is the idea of that bottle? Has 2 markings, hot and cold

Those are level marks for hot and cold. Water of course expands and contracts with heat and cold.
