Road Trip!
Starting Wednesday AM I will be venturing on the second "long" trip in my Phaeton. The plan is to head from the greater NYC area to Ithaca NY using mostly Route 17 and Interstate 81 (with the plan to switch to local roads if the highways are too "fast" for my walloping 45 MPH cruising speed). I have plans to stop in Nyack, Ellenville (or at least Wawarsing), and Binghamton while in route. I am planning to meet up with some of the guys from Southern Tier Model A and Sullivan Trail A's. If any "barners" are around and in route, let me know.

Re: Road Trip!
Thanks All. Al, After going over the generators and the charging circuit time and again, the 5-brush generator gave me an appropriate charge rate. I don't know if the problem was in the generators or the circuit and I haven't swapped the 3-brush back in to find out... I am leaving well enough along... at least for now.

Re: Road Trip!
I was born in Ithaca NY....didn't have any say in the matter though.
Lot's of Cousin's in Binghamton area. I own an Ithaca calendar clock that keeps pretty good time and handles dates for different months. On route 7 in Oneonta stop at Brooks Barbeque. Marc |

Re: Road Trip!
That isn't a long trip.
My grandfather moved his family from Denver, CO to Bakersfield, CA VIA Yellowstone Park. This was in 1919 in a Model T.

Good luck & Happy Travels, Seth !
Suggest you stay off I-81 - too many speeding tractor-trailers and crazies ! I'm about 1 hour south of Binghamton... Love your Touring Car, glad you are driving and enjoying it ! Take care ! SC Frank |

Re: Road Trip!
Hey, Seth.
Since you're only 24 miles from Watkins Glen, you might enjoy a few laps around the track in your Phaeton. Great fun, just watch out for the chicanes!

Re: Road Trip!
Chris, if the car was newer, you would be absolutely correct. A few hundred miles should be nothing. In 5 or 10 years, once I work out the gremlins that came with the car (and when I "get a clue" as to what I am doing), I bet the drive will be less of an adventure.
I might not make it to Watkins Glen, but am hoping to meet some of the Binghamton crew on my return trip. |

Re: Road Trip!
The headlights seem ok. I have a flicker that is the result of the light switch housing possibly being a mismatch of old and new and not locking correctly. The oil pan seems fine, however, the valve cover gasket may be leaking -- I've tightened it up a bit and hope that this fixes the problem. Tomorrow AM it should stop raining. I brought an entire gasket set with me and will likely change the valve gasket at Jim Morris's place over previously scheduled coffee/donuts with some of their guys. I am looking forward to getting some of their insight/expertise as to what they think should be on my "to do" list. My "to do" list when I am back in Rockland includes removing and cleaning out the horn button. I have intermittent ahoogas (Mitch pointed this out). I may also remove the stone guard to improve air flow. this was also the first time the car has seen rain in decades. It was interesting to see how much surface rust appeared on the engine with a little rain water having hit it. Photos to follow.....

Re: Road Trip!
Do you have a front license plate? Does it cover the stone guard?

Re: Road Trip!
I have lots of photos and updates, but no time to post them right now. The trip is going great. I was able to meet up with a bunch of the guys from the Sullivan Trail As and spent the morning talking cars and such. A few of use then spun onto the Cornell campus to "tour" a little. With the weather clearing up a bit, I put the top down and was able to share the car with several of my friends. As expected, it was well received.
Tomorrow AM I will be leaving to return to the NYC area. I may wind up stopping in Elmira and Binghamton. This is all up in the air.- Seth |

Re: Road Trip!
Hey Seth,
When you get around to working on your horn try replacing the horn wire in the light switch / horn rod if cleaning up the button doesn't do the trick. Mine did pretty much the same thing, intermittant and sometimes pretty sick sounding. When I pulled out the wire from the horn rod it looked to be in pretty good shape. However when I gave it a tug or two the wire pulled out of the top contact. I guess after 83 years the soldered connection just wasn't up to snuff anymore. Replaced the wire and the horn now works like an absolute champ. Safe drive,
