Engine Stand
Pulled the engine out of my AA yesterday. Wondering if anyone has any clever ideas for a way to adapt to my engine stand?

Most of the vendors sell this adapter:

Re: Engine Stand
I went ahead and pulled manifold so I could lay it on that side and pulled flywheel. Then hoisted it back up and took of flywheel housing. Then was no problem bolting to stand on flywheel end. Working on disassembly and assessment. Got down to the last three head studs before breaking one. Looks like pistons are 060 over and 2 & 3 have been sleeved.

Re: Engine Stand
I have zero welding skills but I sure don’t see that that attachment is worth the better part of a $100 bill! What am I missing?

Re: Engine Stand
Not a real good picture of the engine but I assembled mine without the flywheel and housing. I was skeptical of attaching it to the side with the adapters that are sold.

Re: Engine Stand
I'd be more concerned about the three wheeled engine stand. I had one fall on me and nearly did a lot of damage to my leg. Only 4 wheeled versions now. Jack

Re: Engine Stand
I have quite a bit of fabricating and machining experience and I can tell you there is probably about $10-15 worth of material but the real money is in labor. These probably aren’t massed produced but done by hand in batches and by the time the steel is cut, bent in a brake, drilled, welded and what not then finally painted, the labor costs add up.

Re: Engine Stand
My engine stand was a 3 wheel version but I converted it to a 4 wheel with a piece of 3" channel iron.

Re: Engine Stand
It's a very heavy built adapter. May seem like a lot, but if you build an engine or two, or just need to pull the pan on an engine out of the car, you will be happy to have it.

Re: Engine Stand
I have the same engine stand as pictured. It is a cheap one from Harbor Freight. I was able to use 3 of the 4 arms that came with the stand by bushing down the eyelets to fit the bolts going into the rear of the block where the flywheel housing bolts on. It is a tight fit but it works. Buy 3 bolts and 3 bushings and you can use what you have....

Re: Engine Stand
I bolted to top two housing bolt holes directly through plate and used 2 of the arms in lower holes.

Re: Engine Stand
I would get rid of that three wheel engine stand ASAP. It's just a disaster waiting to happen. I just bought a nice four wheel one from Harbor Freight. Works a charm!!

Re: Engine Stand
you need two,a side mount and a flywheel housing mount..you can use a conventional one for the fly housing..I used the water inlet boss and the pan rail for the side mount |

Re: Engine Stand
I made mine similar to the one pictured by Mr. Shaft only on mine I attach the lower bolts to the top of the pan rail, this allows easy pan installation while on the stand. Don't worry about hanging the engine by the side, Ford did it that way. It also allows flywheel and clutch installation.
