Smile Last Word in the Oil Altercation....Finally

An old school extremely talented engine builder related this as the absolute best way to choose the correct oil for your Model A or other babbit engine.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS COMPLETELY OR RISK HARM TO YOUR ENGINE

1. Drive your Model A to WalMart. (Make sure you have oil in it)
2. Negotiate your way through the stretch pants crowd to the engine oil aisle.
3. Walk up and down the aisle carefully studying all the different oils and their specifications and additives. (You know, like yes or no to ZDDP, CRUD, NADA, USA, WAX etc.)
4. Go to one end of the aisle. While you are standing there, close your eyes.
5. With your eyes closed, turn your body around 3 times, 360 degrees each time.
6. With your eyes still closed, walk from 1 to 12 steps at your discretion down the aisle and stop. Turn your body 90 degrees either right or left at your discretion.
7. While with your eyes still closed and with your arm stretched straight ahead of you, walk until you come in contact with the shelf.
8. Once in contact with the shelf, grab whatever container you are touching.
9. Open your eyes, put enough of that oil that is in your hand in your cart for your car and go to checkout.

You have just purchased great oil for your Model A. 50 times better than anything available at the time. Use it and enjoy your car

His moral to the story.....with today's oils, it don't matter none.

I don't trust that method. I'd be afraid of hitting the Mobil 1

I know its highly unlikely, but should you touch upon a straight weight oil with no detergent ability, it would not be good. Detergent oil and synthetic is probably one of the best things to come along after WWII.

Hi curt,

Sounds great!

However, with the emails I've received lately showing photos of the "BIG" women who shop at Wal-Mart, I'd hate to grab the wrong thing blindfolded & go to the local Hospital Emergency Room wearing a Wal-Mart shopping basket.

The Walmart Supertech oil comes from good companies just under the Walmart name so its cheaper. When I used to run the local Walmart Tire & Lube Express it came from Mobil. I have it in my A right now.

In a recent thread discussing mon detergent oil it was suggested the you could go to Dolar General and get a quart for a dollar. Well just for sh**s and giggles I went there and checked on thier oil. While you can get DG brand 30 wt non detergent oil there. It is not a dollar. It's $2.75 per quart. The DG brand high detergent 10 w 40 oil is $3.60 a quart and a quart of peak HD 10w40 oil is $3.85 a quart. What was the most interesting about the DG brand oil was the caution label on the bottles. See attached pictures. That alone is enough for me to choose NOT to use non detergent oil.

Only one (1) outstanding oil quality listed makes DG oil worth getting.

It causes cancer in lab animals.

Just park your A, & sprinkle shredded cheese under your engine's rear bearing for mice control.

That's not what I said! If you read it closely, I said I would not use non detergent oil. I'll go further and state that I wouldn't use DG brand oil either. When they put the kind of disclaimers on the bottle like that. Who in their right mind would! My preference in my A is Shell Rotella.

With my 10% discount I could change oil for under $12.00. Rod

Agree:

Already saw in LARGE bold letters: "No protection against sludge & it causes cancer."

The oil guy who wrote this ad in LARGE print on the label should be awarded the "No-Bell-Piece-Prize" for outstanding "Ding-A-Ling" salesmanship advertisement skills.

I like the part "for use in older engines where consumption may be high and economical lubricants are preferred."

I had an old GMC pickup that starting leaking oil to the tune of about a quart per month. I bought the cheap Wal-Mart oil, and drove the truck for 314,000 miles. Never had to change oil, just kept adding. It was still running after I traded it off. That stuff worked exactly as advertised!

im sure glad you posted that pic of the oil container, finally proof that non detergent oil is crap and not to be run in gasolene engines, if the oil company says its crap you have to believe them, this is not an old wifes tail or a private opinion, its from the manufactor, but i bet it wont do any good because there are people on here that will say my dad or grand dad or there mechanic says to use it, and so they will, one thing tho, buy the oil with out the red warning seal on it( for gasolene engines only) that is modern oil with out zink and is meant for use in engines with roller tappet cams

I don't like the price tag. Nothing wrong with the oil I just prefer the cheaper Dinosaur juice.
