Bouncing speedometer needle
I have a 40 Deluxe
The Speedometer reads correct up to 30 mph, but after that it bounces all over the place. Any ideas. The last time it was apart was 25 years ago and i probably know how to fix it but cant remember or bend well enough to work on it' Thanks Roger |

Re: Bouncing speedometer needle
Take the cable loose at the dash, pull the inner cable out and check for kinks or a dry spot. If you see a rusty area on the inner, you need a complete new cable be cause the outer is damaged.

Re: Bouncing speedometer needle
Try some cable lube too. You can sometimes temporarily get away with an outer break with chain lube or removing the inner and slathering it with Vaseline.

Re: Bouncing speedometer needle
Lubriplate is what was used back in the day. Pull the inner cable, wipe clean with mineral spirits and apply a thick coat of Lubriplate. G.M.

Re: Bouncing speedometer needle
If lubing the cable doesn't help you will need to pull, clean and lube the speedometer head/gears. Generally speaking the hardest part is getting the speedometer out of the dash and then back in.

Re: Bouncing speedometer needle
Often the bouncing needle is the result of wear where the cable attaches to speedometer head. As the case wears, the magnetic discs alignment changes causing a varience in the needle drive. Most speedometer cases are made of die cast potmetal with no real bearing to support the shaft. We use Bob's Speedometer in Michigan for repairs.

Re: Bouncing speedometer needle
Just lubing the bearing where the cable attaches to the back of the speedo fixed mine.

Grease will get stiff in cold weather.
Try, the above mentioned, good ole VASOLINE. It's worked great, for me, for decades. MIKE (mikeburch) |

Re: Bouncing speedometer needle
SlowForty....
I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I found that the crimp tab under the car frame was pinching too hard on the cable. I bought a new cable ....used the cable lube....and lightly crimped the cable in place. Works great ! Mike42 |

I used "Lock Ease Graphited Lock Fluid". manufactured by AGS. One f those items that has been on a shelf in the shop for at least a dozen years. Worked great!
