When the tank is full, you should indeed see the fuel behind the glass! It also splashes around when you drive. Neato!!

It is normal to see gas when the tank is above 3/4 full. If it does not leak, you are fine. There are differences in the gauges, but not important unless you are into fine point judging. The early cars had a curved glass lens which magnified the gauge numbers.

That is one of the neat features of the Model A Gas gage, you can actually see the fuel in the tank.

When the tank is full you will see the gasinside the guage. The face plate for the early guage is is oblong, the numbers are red for the "F" and "O" and the other marks are black, the glass is flat; the next style used a magnifing glass at the center of the glass and the face plate matched this feature. there were other changes to the face plate on later guages.

Suggest you get a copy of "Judging Standards" which will identify the date of changes to the gas guage.

Did you reinstall the original lens and faceplate?
Years ago someone made a replacement oval lens out of plastic, so it's not good.
I always reuse the original oval glass lens and faceplate. The faceplate is easy to restore.

Mitch,
This is not a "fishy" story, Chuck, a friend, has a small plastic fish that "swims" half submerged in his sediment bowl. He claims that it is a "bottom feeder" & EATS the crud that accumulates! Bill W.

Go to my website, www.plucks329s.org and there you will find an article I did on the Gas Gauge and related parts for the four years of model A production...It is under Additional Studies.

Dudley...Interesting on the small holes on the botom of the shields!

I also have just replaced my gas gauge for my 29 AA with a new one, and removed an early 1929 gauge with the oval sight glass, using Plucks gauge studies I believe it is an original, the tank is stamped May 15th 29.
I am not sure what to do with it, I am leaning toward reconditioning it, or using the old sight glass in the new gauge.

I always reuse as many original parts as possible. I wire wheel the faceplate, then cut a thin piece of clear tape and apply it where the line is, then spray satin black laquer on it. Remove the tape as soon as the paint flashes. I clean the oval lens with very fine steel wool and a solvent, such as gas or WD-40.

I still need to nickel plate the outer nut.

BTW, I only use cork gaskets on the glass and I used a cork float to replace the dried up cork float. 10 years later it's still fine.

DANGER!! Scratch your sight glass & see if it's plastic, if so, get rid of it!! Both my cars had them, they looked good 'til I quit drinkin' beer & had enough$$$$ to fill them, glass, (plastic) began to turn BROWN, one melted a blob inside & hung up the guage, the other one melted enough to leak gas into the car!!! HOLY+*$&^%#CRAP!!! Bill W.
