It is used on a lathe or drill press with the machines off. It guides the tap straight and perpendicular to the work. The cap mounts in the drill chuck. As you turn the tap handle by hand and the tap enters the work and the peg on the top of the wrench allows it to move forward within the cap but still keeps it in alignment. The peg on the top of the wrench is 1' long. The fit of the cap on the peg is a precision fit. It will hold 1/4-20 1/4-28 12-24 10-32 and 10-24 taps.
