Default A bit of machining. Re-drilling a flywheel.

This will be part of a separate series just showing machining. In this video I show how I redrilled a total of three flywheels. I redrilled one 9" and two 11" clutch flywheels to take a 10" clutch. I used my rotary table for the first time and found that an improvised counter really paid dividends. By the end of the third one I felt I had a good process going. In a separate video I will go into more detail about the bolt pattern relationships for the Early Ford clutches. Follow along as I virtually teach myself to use the milling machine and rotary table. If you enjoy it please check my other videos and SUBSCRIBE. Mart.

Looks good Mart! I just did mine a couple of months ago. It was a little easier as my new pressure plate bolt pattern was evenly spaced. I just centered the rotary table to the mill. Then I centered the flywheel to the table. Moved it over to the radius required and drilled a hole every 60 deg. Just to be safe I laid the PP on the flywheel and traced the hole locations for a visual reference so I could tell if I was off before I drilled. I even got brave and power tapped the holes. My flywheel was already drilled for three different PP's but there was plenty of room for a few more.

I was taught how to lay them out with a pair of dividers and dykem. Need a center pilot the same plane as the clutch surface.

Need to counter bore the hole for the shoulder on the bolt.

What is the acceptable margin of error for pressure plate alignment?

Thank you very much, Mart, for taking the time to make such a great detailed video
so that we all could learn. It's a lot of work to make a really good video that clearly, completely and concisely explains such operations. Wish you were my next door neighbor.
You're the best. Jim

Probably not much these days, but in the '50's and '60's, doing it "by eye" provided acceptable results with no ill effects.

Yes, I was wondering about having the flywheel and assembly re balanced?

Thanks for the interest fellas. I thought it would be of interest to 'barners as it has been discussed in a previous thread. (More than one, maybe). One thing I didn't dwell on was spacing the new holes away from the existing ones. Some techniques mentioned previously didn't do that and I thought it better to space the holes to avoid stress raisers in one area.

Mart.
