Steering gear retaining ring
First of all, I’ve done my homework. Yes, I used the search bar. Yes, I have Les Andrews books. Yes, I’ve googled it. I even YouTubed it.
How do I remove the worm gear retaining ring off my 1928 7 tooth steering shaft? Page 1-311 in the Les Andrews first book simply says to remove it from the end of the shaft. But how? I am going to cut the old worm gear off and press on a new(er) one. I am on this site every day, and you guys are a wealth of information. With out Ford Barn, my AA would never get a chance to be brought back to life.

Re: Steering gear retaining ring
I have just done this recently and its not difficult (and I am a total newbie!). Press the old worm down the shaft with a hydraulic press, just enough to expose the circlip, then lever the circlip out with a screwdriver. Two people can do this more easily than one. Don't worry if you bend the circlip, as it you can bend it back when you replace it later. Make sure you install the new worm the right way up. If you haven't got a hydraulic press (the most useful tool in my workshop) you can tap the old worm off with a piece of wood or soft copper hammer. But I don't recommend installing the new worm that way, as they break very easily, and they are not cheap.

Re: Steering gear retaining ring
To remove the worm, you must first push it further up the shaft, then remove the small circlip and only then are you able to take it off. Failure to remove the circlip will only end in frustration and a mangled shaft.
