Also check out Gas Axe Garage in St Johns, MI.
Mike Boerema has a lot of experience building blown flatheads. http://www.gasaxegarage.com |

Re: Who does block porting work?
Flatheads will wake up with a good supercharger even if a person doesn't port or polish all that much. Most folks that coax what little is to be had from a port job are looking for better results with no supercharger. More cubic inch displacement & valve lift will give better results since there isn't much of a port to begin with. It's always a trade off with flatheads.
It always depends on whether it is for the street or for the track and how much work a person wants to put into it. Ron Main had to do a lot of changes to the motor to get the flatfire streamliner to the horse power and speed that he got out of it. Ronnie Roadster went a bit different direction but it was still very impressive on both counts. It takes a lot to get over 200 HP with this old design. |

Re: Who does block porting work?
Get a junk block for practice, buy a sonic gauge, some tools and learn to do it yourself.
It may take a bit longer but you will get more for the money. Even a mild cob and polish job is not cheap when buying it. Remember, on flathead ports, bigger is better and faster. .100 minimum wall all the way through. |

Re: Who does block porting work?
Pete has given you some sound advice . . . don't practice on a good block if you've never ported a flathead before. There is nothing quite as sad as hitting water on an otherwise good block. LOL
Drop me a PM with what your plans are for the engine - be happy to at least chat about it. Porting is 1/2 art and 1/2 science . . . and a dirty job to say the least, but it does really help a flathead make more HP if done correctly and part of a complete package. Lots of guys like to show off their nice chrome looking upper intake ports (the only part they ported/polished) . . . worth bragging rights and that is about it. It takes correct porting, new better/bigger valves, the right cam, heads setup correctly, etc - to make it all work together. But, it all depends on what your plans are for the engine, what other parts are going into it and what you plan to use it for! It is all time and money in the end . . . |
