Default Patton Mercury

In my endless search for car images I came across this one of General Patton riding in what appears to be a 39 Mercury convertible. Post WWII in Paris, August , 1945.

We need more of his type of men today.

He only lived about another 4 months after this photo was taken.

[QUOTE=Seth Swoboda;1376047]We need more of his type of men today.

They are around but don't get into the right positions typically. A person of principle is an irritant in leadership today. His helmet looks shinier than the car.

Couldn't agree more. At least he lived to see VE Day, The events on Aug 6th and 8th, followed by VJ day. Great photo, thanks for posting.

If you read your millitary history books the man was actually a bit of a nut case..twin pearled handled pistols and all to add to that chrome helmut. This picture must be taken not long before he was killed in the motor accident. The way those Parisians have got their hands out they may have mistken him for another wartime leader who used to stand up in his car, but the General looks to be enjoying it anyway

He was more than a bit of a nut case, Eisenhower had to bale him out numerous times.

In the Pacific theater we had MacArthur with his 'issues' and in the New Mexico desert near Los Alamos we had Oppenheimer drinking gin martinis from breakfast on and smoking three packs a day. They had the weight of the world on their shoulders. Where would we be without them?

Agreed... I didn't want to over emphasize it. Gen Mark Clarke on the other hand
was an idiot who only allowed himself to be photographed from his "good side", went against orders & took Rome to satisfy his own ego at the expense of letting a load of Germans escape the Italian theatre. It backfired on him as a day or so later it was "no big news" as operation Overlord had begun. Gen Omar Bradley on the other side of the coin was the "steady hand".

And running the whole show were Roosevelt and Churchill, arguably one of the greatest alliances of all time.

Very much so. Without Churchills resilience and "never surrender" attitude, & "lend -lease" which was Roosevelts baby, the war in Europe could have been done and dusted earlier with a different result.

Patton's revolver's were Ivory handled...not pearl. They were initially a pair of Colt Single Action Army in .45 Long Colt...but he gave one to a Hollywood actor who had the guts to perform for frontline troops. Patton replaced it with a S&W .357.

He may have been a bit of a "nut case" but he was also the most feared allied commander of WWII in the European theatre. Hitler nor Stalin wanted to be caught in his means.

MacArthur...was an egotistical narcissist, not so affectionately known as "bugout Doug" for his departure from the Philippines.

snappydon I stand corrected on the handles you are right. McArthur whether "dugout doug" or " bugout doug", it was for the same reason. He will never be forgiven because of Bataan.
