Wow....You could be talking about several different set-ups here. Is it a '39 Standard with a stock fan mounted on the generator, or a '39 DeLuxe with a stock fan mounted on the crankshaft? And just how far do you want to extend it? We'll assume that you realize that you normally don't want to insert a fan blade any more than about 1/3 to 1/2 of the blade's chord inward beyond the rear of the shroud's opening. That being stated, I'd be very wary of spacing a fan with a hub any real distance at all, as you're just asking for an imbalance (or "out-of-square") situation, especially as the spacer width increases. Just MY opinion! DD |

Re: spacer for a 39 flathead fan
It is a 39 deluxe fan mounted on the crankshaft the reason i was asking about the spacers in the directions it says never install the fan where it is either all the way in or all the way out of the shroud using the proper fan spacer, your fan should be located with 1/3 of the fan blade inside the fan shroud i was trying to think ahead just in case i might need the spacers i will be taking V8 coopman advice i also plan on buying 2 new water pumps Thanks for your help in this matter. Re: spacer for a 39 flathead fan
Jim,
My '41 pickup has the same crank mounted fan as the '39 del. I used a Walker shroud ( black plastic...you cut the fan hole ) and fan entered entered quite nicely. The shroud worked well and made the difference. Charlie ny |

Re: spacer for a 39 flathead fan
There are several different fans that will fit having different length hubs. What is the overall length of your hub and how much longer do you want it?

Re: spacer for a 39 flathead fan
While we are on the subject of fans/hubs etc, let me ask a dumb question. Will the standard generator mount fan work on the later crank mount, i.e are the fans interchangeable? I have several fans with different length hubs that I think are for generator mounts. Old semi-senile minds want to know. LOL

Re: spacer for a 39 flathead fan
I have a 19A fan that is about 3/4" longer then the 91A, maybe you could look for one of them if that is the distance you need (or PM me if it would work for you, I would sell it)

Re: spacer for a 39 flathead fan
I put a Champion aluminum radiator in my '41 coupe. The fan was like 1.75" from the radiator and it got hot quickly in traffic. Had a friend machine an aluminum spacer to place the fan closer the radiator. Even with a partial shroud it did not help the overheating very much.
Picture attached of the spacer in place. Also picture attached of the crank pully, which I believe is stock '41 car. But don't know if it is the same as your 39. The spacer is a snug fit and perfectly centered, so no vibration. I took it out and put in a truck radiator, which greatly reduced the overheating problem. If you think you can use the spacer, PM me and I will send it to you. It adds 1 1/16". |

Re: spacer for a 39 flathead fan
.
Adding THAT (or ANY) spacer to the overall length of a stock fan would scare the bejesus out of me. Not only does it add to the leverage factor, but it also introduces one more possible point of failure into the mix. There ain't enough numbers on my keyboard to describe the number of weird forces on that big, heavy fan spooling-up that far out from a supportive member. One thing for sure....the day WHEN it does eventually let-go, it WILL be quite memorable, and friggen' ugly! But WHAT do I know? On another point....it was extremely nice to offer the spacer to the OP for gratis. DD |
