12 volt starter rpm reduction
I installed a 12 volt starter in my 36 and I want to reduce the RPM so the Bendix drive doesn't hit the flywheel so hard and reduce the noise. I am sure others have this problem.

If you are talking about running the original 6 volt starter on 12 volts then your remedy is to install a 12 volt starter.

Re: 12 volt starter rpm reduction
Don't know how an early starter is constructed but on my Merc engine I used the housing, field windings, brushes, end plate from a NAPA rebuilt Y block 12 volt starter. (about $50).
Took about 20 minutes and seems to have cut down the rpm |

Re: 12 volt starter rpm reduction
Sounds like you're running a 6V starter on 12V? I used to do this (as it turns the engine over a lot faster than on 6V), but it is hard on starters, hard on the Bendix and hard on flywheel ring gears. Now, if I'm switching the car over to 12V, then I have my original 6V starter reworked with 12V field coils - easy fix if you can find a starter shop in your area.

So does that mean you simply installed the flathead's armature in the case of the Y block starter? Sounds like something even I can do. Electrical stuff has always puzzled me the most.

Yup, cleaned up the 6 volt armature and drive. I have read that the entire 12 volt starter can be used with a slight mod to the drive. Got in a hurry because I was replacing the flywheel and clutch and rebuilding the T-10. Should have done it. Quote:

Re: 12 volt starter rpm reduction
I used a 1964 Ford Galaxy and put my existing Bendix drive onto it.

Re: 12 volt starter rpm reduction
If you are going 12v, I'd recommend getting a gear-reduction "mini-starter". They put the bendix into the front of the ring gear, never any hang-ups. They draw less than half the current of the original style starters, good for battery life. Going on near 15 yrs on mine without a hickup.

Re: 12 volt starter rpm reduction
Ross, is there a mini starter listed for an 8BA or is it listed for another application?

Re: 12 volt starter rpm reduction
I hereby request the original poster to repost and clearly explain what it is he needs to know. Somehow, I got lost. Please include pertinent electrical info like:
Is the present electrical system 12V or 6V? Is the battery 12V or 6V? Is the starter 12V or 6V? Do you want to convert your 6V starter to 12V or do you have a 12V starter you want to convert to 6V? |
