Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
Wondering what is the best way?
Coil is dead, so I used the bottom section for a coil adapter, now I'd like to cover it up with the top...but remove the coil. Thanks Last edited by Mike B; 07-18-2015 at 05:44 PM. |

Re: Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
I separated the bottom of the coil, and am using the bottom piece to run a remote coil.
So now I'd like to use the top of it that houses the actual coil, just to cover up the exposed area. |

Re: Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
Just drill the top off the three rivets that hold it together, then prize it apart, you have to clean out the old coil and insulation ,

Maybe call Skip Haney in Punta Gorda, Fl and ask him how he does it.

Re: Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
Use a heat gun to soften the tarry substance and 'dig it out'.

Maybe low heat in an oven to soften it up (when the wife's not home).

Re: Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
Success, but heat gun was going slow, so wheeled out the torch
Thanks again! |

Me, tending to be the impatient type, also use faster heat, but did not want to suggest that in case....

Re: Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
I'd be very careful how you dispose of the innards of old coils, as PCBs were widely used back in the day as dialectric insulators and coolants. Polychlorinated Biphenyl is a known carcinogen and Persistent Organic Pollutant.

Re: Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
PCB was widely used in cooling oils for transformers/coils/caps.
The tar/asphalt has a chance of being reinforced by asbestos fibres. |

Bingo with the PCB, make sure to clean the mess up completely and wear gloves.

Re: Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
No, actually it can be absorbed through your skin.
I recall a reader Digest condensed story years ago as a kid, when an electrician cleaned up a downed transformer. He began having outbursts, burning sensation, etc, that would come and go. It was traced back to getting the substance on his skin (don't recall how much though). No worries, all's gone, tossed it over in the neighbors pool Heck, truck is gone too, on it's way to Sweden...never did get a chance to fit the cap. |

Re: Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
All the good stuff is getting away from us. On the good side, those Swedes will put a proper coil on it!

Yeah, sent over the 239 with it as well..was kinda neat, a Swede came and inspected it, next day made an offer and told me where it was going (the inspector lives in Sacramento). Why I say it's kinda neat, I'm 1/4 Swede...so really (being half Sicilian) it's "staying in the Family" |

Re: Want to take the coil out of Helmet Coil Cover
Dis-assembled an old Atwater-Kent radio transformer the same way about 6 months ago. Lots of wet hot tar came out. Did the operation over an aluminum pan so not much mess. They seemed to do things right in the good old days! Built for long life. Wished we had this mentality today.

I called Apple support. Told them I needed some wet hot tar for my iPhone.
