Default Stewart Warner South-Wind Heater Operation Questions

Wondering if you guys could answer a few questions about a South-Wind that's in a '40 that we just got.....

I found a scanned installation manual online, and I think I got down the operation:
1) Start the engine
2) Pull out the valve fully
3) The fuel vapor will be drawn into the unit and ignited by the glow plug
4) The bi-metallic switch will turn the blower fan on once the burner heats up

I ran through this procedure with the heater, and got the blower fan to kick on. It doesn't blow extremely hot heat, but it does seem to be slightly warm. The exhaust line back to the intake seems to be warm, but is slightly hard to tell with a hot engine bay though.

So for the questions....what do you think I need to do to get this thing blowing hot air? I'm thinking that it may need to come apart and get cleaned? Is that the correct sequence of events to operate the heater?

Thanks,
Cory

Cory: I am in the process of cleaning/rebuilding a Jr. Model now. You will find that the "oven" or "furnace" is probably plugged up with lead salts form the old leaded gas. Those things are awfully hard to clean out. If you can find a NOS one you are in luck. Same thing for the finned heat exchanger. Those are the two main elements for heat output and distribution. Yes, you have the correct sequence of events down pat.
Good luck. Lawson

Blow the fuel feed-line out.

I'm in the process of getting the one in the pickup working. I removed it to check the wiring and general condition of the unit. While handling alot of gray ash fell out of the burner inlet. I blew more out with compressed air. If you unit is caked up it won't make a much heat.
