Default Mystery noise

Went for a bit of a drive the other day, after about ten miles I felt a slight hesitation, drove on and it got worse to the point that I had to pull off the road.
Checked under the hood and everything seemed OK. Tried to start her up, would not start until I choked it. Was able to get home. Revved it up in the driveway, running rough, backfired and blew black smoke out the pipes. Today I checked and cleaned the fuel filter. Started fine, let it warm up, bumped the throttle a bit and heard a strange "pop" , revved it a bit more and heard more "popping". I thought it sounded like it was coming from the carb. Pop is intermittent.
Engine is 1951 V8 1CM fresh rebuild, carb fresh rebuild, fuel pump new, plugs and wires new. Anyone heard this before? Thanks

sounds like the power valve has a bad diaphragm, when you cleaned out filter did it have water in it? what distributor are you running? could be the points closed up

Has it been sitting all winter? Others here with more experience may suggest that it could be sticky valves and a good dose of MMO or Seafoam may solve the problem. Mine had a bit of an intermittent "stumble" last fall before I put her to bed for the winter. Will give her the treatment this spring.

If choking helped it to start, I doubt that the power valve would be the problem. If you have a condenser in the ignition, that is where I would start.
