Shipping Generator to Ontario, Canada

I have a powerhouse generator in a 10" square box and the weight is 18#. I took it to the post office this morning and was told it would cost $72.38 to mail it to Ontrio, Canada. That sure seems way out of line and I was wondering if anyone else knows a better way to go? Thanks

BTW, I can often fit the long generator in the medium flat rate box, but used a regualr box a couple weeks ago, and it cost me just over $27 to send it a few states away. That high rate also was a shock.

I can fit the long generator in the medium flate rate box and have room for packing material, but the powerhouse would barely fit and be damaged for sure by the careless handling of the PO.

Always use the post office box. If you use any old box its muvh more expensive.

This year all international rates have doubled. It has made shipping anything out of our country very tough. Not sure of the motivating factor, but it makes business very difficult especially when the Chinese can ship here for almost nothing. It gets me when I see things on ebay from China for $3.00 with free shipping.

Seems a little high; I sent a generator from Ottawa to MN back in December for a total cost of 42.17$ CA. The weight was listed as 18.26 pounds and was shipped Expedited Parcel-USA. It took 7 days to arrive, shipped December 17th and arrived on the 24th. Odd that it would cost 70% more to ship it the same distance only in the opposite direction.

Some Canadians have pick up and drop off places over the USA border,dont hurt to ask.?? ken ct. ive done this many times.

I've found that Fedex usually has the best rates to Canada, if the Postal rates are too exorbitant for what you're sending. They have a good cost calculator on their web site, but if you've never used it before it can take a while to get thru it. I plugged in you dimensions and weight and got about $35 from Minneapolis to Toronto (as an example).

The main advantage the Postal system has is the cost for Customs clearance. Canada Post charges only $5 plus the actual taxes (based on declared value) whereas the couriers all base their handling charges on the declared value - the higher the item is valuated at, the higher the handling charges are (on top of the taxes). Here again Fedex is usually the best of the couriers (UPS is usually the absolute worst all around). As the sender, you don't need to cover these charges, the receiver in Canada pays them and many have gotten an unpleasant surprise when they get their bill from the courier.

Anything valued under $20 is duty free, no processing charges, etc. What you pay to send it is the total that anyone will incur, whether using the Postal system or a Courier. An advantage to the Post Office sometimes is that they will push stuff through duty free that has been declared at much higher than $20.

Confused yet?? There is no quick and easy answer. Total costs can't be calculated without knowing what you going to value it at for Customs purposes. If I were you, I would contact the buyer and let him decide how to proceed (assuming he's the one paying the bill). Good luck.

Any of the flat rate boxes, the shipping cost only applies to a U.S.A. address. Once you hit over the border it goes way UP...

Yes Medium Flat rate boxes anywhere in USA are $12.35 and I would DEFINATELY suggest over wrapping and adding FRAGILE all over it as I have had a few boxes treated a tad rough,

we are talking very small box....
what I was told is anything over 4 IBS is now very expensive through the po when going to Canada. No way around it unless UPS has a better rate, which they often do.

A few years back,I had a Brumfield head shipped to Canada and there was no duty on it because the part was for a vehicle over 20 years old.On the customs declaration ,state that the part is for a 1928 Ford.

I ship art daily. much more fragile than an generator and NEVER EVER EVER use the post office.. Oh it will get there, how, when, and what condition you will never ever know and just try to get your money back when insuring it. There is a reason there are companies like UPS...use them Tom!

Welcome to shipping parts to us guys in Canada. The Regular Post is the best way. If it gets shipped by UPS the customs and handling charges will be at least $75.00 for the guy buying the parts. I only use the post it take a little longer but I don't think the guy needs it the next day!!!! Just make up a nice wooden box and use "Robertson" screws in it and it will go right through customs because they won't be able to get it open!!!LOL.
