Question 1930 Tudor Rear Support Wood Question

I have been unable to get the rear support wood behind the brackets in each corner. The fit across the back is great and follows the contours of the roof opening.

In looking at the original piece of wood I can see the wood is indented or recessed a slight amount in the area of the bracket. I can't tell if this is from the tightening of the bracket or if the wood is suppose to actually be a little thinner in the area of the bracket.

Looking for suggestions from those that are more experience than I.
