Can This Wheel Cylinder be Saved?
I have been saving this USA made 1940 Ford OEM wheel cylinder ( 1" x 1 14" bore) for last 40 years.
I was thinking I could rebuild it by heating it up and filling in the pitted area with brazing rod and then hone it smooth. What say you? Opinions welcomed. I hate to throw it away. |

Consider having it sleeved... a common technique to restore/rebuild original parts.

WHY? You're gonna put in the extra effort to do a great job (just like Jim Pullen is famous for). It's STILL likely to leak, and then you're REALLY gonna be pissed! WHY JIM? Coop . |

- A trailer queen concourse type car that will be rarely driven, yes l, I'd pay the price for the machine shop cost to rebuild it to keep the original part. - A daily driver or weekend car you're taking everywhere, I'd go with a replacement part. I wouldn't take a chance on a safety component. I have the same issue, my crusty '46 most parts original and don't seem to be practical to rebuild or improved.

Re: Can This Wheel Cylinder be Saved?
Ok, the "sleeve it" folks win. I was just thinking that it would be neat to try my brazing idea with cast iron.
Thanks to all for your replies. Jim |

Re: Can This Wheel Cylinder be Saved?
I have both the brake master cylinder, and the hydraulic clutch master cylinder sleeved on my roadster for over 20 years now, with no problems.

Re: Can This Wheel Cylinder be Saved?
New ones are available and not expensive. Use in pairs as the diameter is bigger. Look upon it as an upgrade. There were issues with the drillings on the rear cylinders but from my experience the fronts were always ok.
