Default Pull the engine and tranny ?

I will be pulling the 272 Y-block engine out of my 55 Ford in order to install a rear main seal. What is easier, pulling the engine & tranny as one unit or pulling just the engine ????
The tranny is a T86 with a R10 overdrive & is in good working order.
I did try to install a rear seal with the engine still in the car but it still leaks so I will to do it with the engine out of the car in order to remove the crank shaft to install the seal.....so let me know what you think about pulling the engine with or without the tranny....Thanks

Without, longer but far easier.

What might be a helpful hint, if you're using an engine hoist that doesn't roll too well...
Because the engine has to be pretty high to go over the front of the car, and thinking about yanking the hoist away from the car with all that weight swinging in the air so far off the floor made me fairly nervous...
after the engine was high enough I left the hoist sitting in place and rolled the car backward out from under the engine. This came out of a '55 Bird so it may be slightly lower than I'd expect from a 'full-sized' car.

I pulled my 292 with fordomatic attached from my 56 Victoria with no problem at all. By taking the Radiator, front bulkhead and grill made it much easier. Good luck with your project!

You have one of the best lifting plates around. I have used the same type a couple of times and they work super.

Be careful not to let the tailshaft housing kiss the windshield.

Started the 55 up yesterday to measure how much oil is leaking from the rear main seal I just installed. Let it run at 1200 RPM for 15 minutes then let is sit overnight with a drip tray underneath and the tray had about a teaspoon of oil in it.
I did order another seal for it but I am thinking I will wait until the fall to pull the engine to reseal it and use that job as a winter project...Just wanted to let everyone know...regards,John
