Mounting Stud for Top Saddles??
I've been looking for a pair of original top saddle mounts for my 1928 Phaeton for several years, but haven't found any. They should be easy to duplicate to exact standards. Does anyone have blueprints or a good picture and dimensions for the studs (posts) that the top saddles bolt to for a late 1928 Phaeton? Thanks

Re: Mounting Stud for Top Saddles??
Tom,
I bought a top rest kit a couple of years ago that included the metal saddles, saddle pads, studs and some cheesy leather?? straps. The kit was a better deal than buying the studs separately, All the studs are, are 4 to 5" long 1/2" rods with threaded ends. If you are in no hurry, I can bring one of them to the clinic in September for you to copy. I debated on whether to try to make a pair or purchase them. I have a hard time straightly threading bolts and rods. At the time they were about $30 each - way over priced. The whole kit I bought was only about $65 if I remember correctly. I see they have come down to about $15 to $16 each. Still over priced what they are. Do you need the saddles? The ones that came in the kit are a dead ringer for the originals I have. Let me know if you need them soon or can wait until mid September. Rusty Nelson |

I have some original saddles and leathers, but not the posts. Are you sure the repro post are an EXACT copy of originals?

Re: Mounting Stud for Top Saddles??
They look good to me. I can't see how else they could be made. I have never seen an original, but what beside a straight steel rod could they be. Dave Lopes never installed any on his phaeton that was at French Lick. He had a couple of rubber buttons covering the holes. He told me he had never put his top down since he installed it. That is the only fine points 28/29 phaeton I have ever seen.

I'll probably use rubber plugs once I make or get some made, since I never put my top down either. |

Re: Mounting Stud for Top Saddles??
I don't think there are any stops even on an original stud. I do have some studs with 5/8" threads that had stops on them I was told here on Fordbarn, but they were for a model T (or so I was told). You couldn't see the stop, if they were there, unless you try to look in the dark hole in the quarterpanel. I installed my studs temporarily when I was mocking up the body panels and they worked just fine. The studs stopped going into the bracket at the end of the threads.
