1933/34 dual gauge details.
Need advice from someone with a nos 33/34 dual gauge as to what the finish is on the temperature gauge wire encasing that goes around the temperature sender.
Thanks Graham |

The finish on the wire wound around the sending tubing on the ones I have appears to be something like dull clear or perhaps the wire itself was treated to hinder oxidation. Whatever it was worked pretty well as even most used gauges' wire windings are usually in good shape. NOS speedometer, four-cylinder choke, RHD V8 throttle, and '33-'34 throttle cable casings have a similar finish.

Hi David,
Thanks for that. I may have to experiment somewhat with the finish. My dual temp gauge has corrosion on the winding but not rusted out so hopefully I may be able to save it and duplicate the finish. I initially thought it may have had a grey or silver type finish that could be easily replicated but alas not so. |

The one possible drawback of using gun bluing might be what it does to the finish of the copper tubing inside the steel winding. What I do to remove rust from the winding is dip it in metal prep, which also brings up the original color of the copper tubing and after letting everything dry thoroughly spray it with clear fixative which will maintain the original colors of both the winding and the tubing. |
