Default Can somebody shed some light as to what these people are thinking?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JSDQ4BcIiWc

I have seen several trials videos online that involve old cars. This is the first one i have seen with model A’s. Im all about doing what you want with what is yours and i would never tell any of these cars owners that they shouldnt do this, but why do they?

Oh it definitely looks like fun. I guess i was just surprised to see it being done with nearly 100 year old cars.

It does look like fun.

It seems like the lighter weight phaetons did better than the heavier sedans.

Because it's fun

It's a Model A and how you drive it is your version of fun
I would never do that to my car, but my car wasn't built for that
Just think of all the hours just getting your Modal A ready to climb muddy hills
These guys are dedicated to their version of fun

In south Louisiana, when I was 15 I had a '29 roadster and me and my buddies would take it out and try to get it stuck. What fun. We always made it back. Fun in 1950.

All good points. I guess right when i seen the videos i was picturing myself taking my model A through some mud holes. I think i’ll keep my A on the asphalt and save the mud for my atv’s. Dont get me wrong, it does look like fun. Id rather use your model A to do it though.

Do you mean that

F=ma where a = dv/dt so F=mdv/dt, and Fdt=mdv, integrating both sides yields Ft=mv where Ft is Impulse and mv is Momentum?

If you think this is bad, you want to see the Austin trials on the same course. Talk about scarce and expensive parts, not to mention somewhat fragile. The little Austin Sevens push through the mud and the crud. I've seen some that got stuck, but I never saw one actually "Break" down. Pretty harrowing course for these old girls.

One wants to get weight onto the rear wheels thus coupe and roadsters aren't seen much unless they have a dicky seat... other ways are getting grip are dropping the tyre pressure to single psi figures , and synchronised bouncing to add "weight" to the driving wheels. .. bouncing sideways sometimes needed if just one wheel is spinning ... Model As are favoured for this lark as they are cheap, tough and have excellent low speed torque. All good muddy fun... certainly not clean fun!

They would be bored to tears watching a tour of old cars piddlying down the road at 45mph, so to each his own. I'm sure many of our grandparents thought it would be fun...but that was before the internets...

Yeah, it looks like fun, but I’d hate to do the repairs afterward. I wouldn’t want to participate In my car. Maybe use a friend’s car instead? [emoji23]

The British seem to concern themselves more with the mechanical aspects of the car when restoring. Paint jobs are usually whatever colors are cheap. Note that the Mod A s are painted colors Henry never used. And very little of BC/ CC. That level of shine is phoney any how! Overrestored! However, I wonder which engine they are using.

These conversions to wood gasifier were mostly done during the war as fuel was expensive and availability was very bad. That said I haven't once seen one in real life so I guess they are extremely rare today. (most have probably been converted back to stock or just scrapped as time went on)
So the chances of having a real oven inside the Model A are probably higher than a wood gasifier A.

When watching these videos about old and vintage cars being driven hard offroad I'm kinda torn. On one side it's cool to see the cars being brought to their limits, and I kinda think the conditions of the roads in the 20s and 30s were not much better than what we can see here.

On the other side it breaks my heart to see rare (they really are rare over here!) and old cars enduring such torture. I know that I wouldn't EVER do it to one of my cars.

I'd take the old enduro instead and have at least as much fun as the guys driving their cars.

If you want more stuff like this, check out videos about the "Land's End Trial":

Trialling is car control against the terrain - not the clock. The aim is to clear the section without stopping or hitting a cane. The marker canes are normally staked out to limit the amount of momentum possible between turns. It's knowing when to trickle - and when to burn.

Normal road tyres have to be used - steering lock and ground clearance are handy.

The VSCC like the Model A. Relatively cheap compared with a Vauxhall or Bentley... and loads of low down torque.

IMG_0563.jpgAs one of the participants in the video I must say its the most fun to be had on 4 wheels, usually 2 day events involving up to a dozen or so hills and a testament to the build quality of these wonderful cars requiring very little attention between events. When you live in the UK with its temperamental weather you have to make the best of what you've got!

WE do similar things down here in NZ. Go on You Tube and Type in Irish Man Creek Rally. You will get to see what go's on.That is a famous South Island event lots of metal roads and off road Driving, for pre 1931 cars. Lots of Model A's attend.

Up here in the North Island we now have a similar VCC event called the Highland Fling. It started this April and I did attend. Also only open to Pre '31 cars. There were 110 entrants and 47 of them were Model A's of all types and conditions. It was Model A Heaven. It was held around the small central North Island town of Taihape. We made the main street look like a scene from the 20's. Rally HQ was the local pub. Lots of fun and games. All on back country metal roads and cross country private farm tracks. It was really enjoyable to drive on the type of roads and tracks that the A's were made for. My roadster just ate up the miles! Already booked for next year. Will take some chains for the muddy bits, but rope round the rear wheels worked this year. Video of event not out yet. Happy motoring.

Well that looks like a lot of fun, except for the weather. Brrr. I'd like to give it a go, with someone else's Model A.

And there are times when I have a long memory.

Parking my roadster on the Levee here in SE Louisiana recently, I managed to get it stuck in the mud.

I couldn't find any fat girls to bounce in my rumble seat but I was able to spray mud all over a group of good Samaritans who were kind enough to give me a push.
