Default Paint removal

I was looking for suggestions in stripping the paint off my A. I originally thought about soda blast, but then a friend suggested a chemical paint stripper.

My question is ....have any barners used a chemical stripper? And if so, what were the concerns or problems you had with this method of removal?

Thanks

There are all types of media blasting where very low air pressure is used (to avoid warpage) but generally speaking, specialty equipment is necessary. Chemical paint removal is slow and messy, ...and can be dangerous due to toxic fumes. In my opinion, low-pressure media blasting is the only way to go for the above reasons.

Soda blasting is the way to go, but it does;nt remove rust, if you use a paint stripper, it can get into places you don;t need it to and can come out to haunt you in your final paint job, I did it the hard way, Razor blades and sand paper to bare metal, and the paint job turned out great...did it myself over the winter [took all winter] but it was worth it!!! you can usually get a soda blast job for around $500.00 in your driveway and it takes about 5 hours and usually the fellow that does the blasting puts the car on a tarp cleans it and then you dump the mess in the garbage.

I wish i could find someone do do it at my house for 500.00!

The only place I could find in south Florida wants 1500.00 and i have to bring it to him.

And where did you read that soda will not remove rust?

This is the first thing that came up in google for "Soda Blast Rust Removal"

Chesapeake Soda Clean

"A properly formulated soda blasting media is made of Sodium Bicarbonate that is manufactured to be in a consistent, larger crystal size. When it strikes the material you are soda blasting the crystal explodes outward and the explosion is the force that strips your target of grease, paint, rust, mold, dirt, whatever it is you are removing.

To do all the sheetmetal on a Model A here runs about the same price as Mike's area. While I cannot comment on the soda, here it is ultra-fine Plastic that is used (about the consistancy of worn-out glass beads from a blast cabinet), ...and due to the pressure it is blown at the metal, it doesn't do much for rust. Aluminum Oxide at the same 35-40 lbs. does wonders against the rust though. A/O is much slower at removing the paints & substrates.

Soda blasting is great fun (although a little pricey for all the media). It's great for things that would not tolerate getting sand and dust into them. But in my experience, it does not remove rust at all, not even a little bit.
