Exhausting question?
Does anyone make the pipe from the front of the muffler to the bottom of the exhaust manifold where the clamp fits? I can not find this in any catalog and this is the only piece I need (mine was damaged) I went to Midas and they can bend it but not flare it for the exhaust seal. Thanks, Steve

Find a muffler guy with IMAGINATION & skill! J.P, my 3rd generation Kzhaust pro could plumb my whole drain system if needed or could put "speaking tubes" to every room in my house, or could do a central vacuum system! Bill W.

Re: Exhausting question?
Go to someone else that Bends Exhaust Pipe, I took what I had left from the Manifold outlet, with the 90 degree bend. And had 2 of them made, and they were of heaver gauge then the Original pipe. They had No trouble making the Flange.
Also I had them make up 2 Tail pipes, bent using an original for a pattern, 16 inches longer on the end to clear my Huckster Body. For the Muffler I had a Ford Replacement Round Muffler built for Model A's. |

Re: Exhausting question?
Try a HOT ROD shop that does exhaust work. Most Midas's are like NAPA, if it isn't in the computer it was never made. JMO

Re: Exhausting question?
I did like several others have suggested -- went to a "real" muffler shop (Not Midas or Mineke). They made me a flare that fit perfectly with no leaks. I did take an exhaust manifold there for them to fit it to. Took about 10 minutes and cost $10.

Re: Exhausting question?
I thought all muffler shops would have a simple 45 degree cone to make the flange. It's worth noting the header pipe was originally bent at 85-87 degrees.

Re: Exhausting question?
Interesting. I never could get my Bratton's exhaust to fit at the manifold flange. So I've been living with it, I think my 30 is awfully loud compared to my friends A, yet I can find no obvious leaks. The manifold gasket was changed awhile back.
Only exhaust folks around here are Midas & Meinke (who I reported to the Better Business Bureau) a few years ago (different management). |

Re: Exhausting question?
Google shows 12 others in your area besides Midas & Mineke.

Re: Exhausting question?
Thanks CarlG. I'll have to take a look just how close these sites are. I avoid long trips in the A and stay out of this insane traffic.

Re: Exhausting question?
It can't be much of a muffler shop if they can't do a simple flare on the end of the pipe, and since my one BAD experience with Midas in 1971 I've never considered them much of a muffler shop.
I needed a tail pipe for my 1952 Studebaker Land Cruiser and no one sold that part, so I had to have it made. I had just installed a new muffler and I had a 9 A.M. appointment to have Midas make and install the tail pipe, but didn't get in until noon. For 3 hours I got to stand and watch them heat pipes red hot and hammer them into place, because they weren't bent correctly. My tail pipe fell off on the road about 15 miles after I left the shop. |

Re: Exhausting question?
On Marco's drawing I see the flange taper on the pipe was changed from .035"-.045" to .070" after late April '30.
What was the taper of this area on the exhaust manifold? Did it change also? Over the years when I replaced my muffler assy (the cheap one), I have taken the pipe to a local muffler shop and had them increase the size of the flare with their equipment. The flare on the cheap ones is tiny and difficult or impossible to get sealed. With the larger flare (closer to original) I've never had to use any sealant or gasket to get a nice tight seal. |
