Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
The Mercury heads could be put on any 8BA style motor. If the crank is 4 inch stroke and the bearing surfaces are repairable, it's worth $400.

Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
I think 8CM heads were original on '49 and '50 Mercury 255's, but like Art said, they could have been swapped out over the years.

Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
I've run across several 8ba's with a 3 3/4" crank that had Merc heads swapped on. I guess the thought was that bolting a set of Merc heads on a Ford engine would add horsepower but in actuality it was a decrease in horsepower/performance. That said, Merc heads don't necessarily mean a 4" Merc crank. Don't ask me how I now.

Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
Measure across the width of the counterweights. The 4-inch crank is near 6.5-inches across the cheek. I can't tell what the condition of the journals are on that crank. They can go as far as .030" undersize. Hopefully the crank will clean up withing usable specs.
If the block will pass a pressure test for each bank and there are no unrepairable cracks detected in the valve pockets, pan rails, crank webs or other structural areas of the block then it may be a usable 8BA type block. There are only a few areas where small cracks won't affect operation. The center bolt to coolant port cracks on the cylinder decks are sometimes acceptable for use but that's about it. |

First year Mercury 1939 99A pictured, 40-42 09A-19A , 46-48 29A-59A and 49-53 CM.
Mostly a whopping 96hp with the 6.3:1 compression ration, hope this helps. |

Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
From the pictures posted, the O/P is referring to the later (1949-1953) engines.
'49-'51 Mercury 255 ci 6.8:1 compression 110 hp. '53-'53 Mercury 255 ci 7.2:1 compression 125 hp. |

With respect....1941 Merc is represented as Model "19A-". 1942 Merc is represented as Model "29A-". '46 thru '48 engines are all referred-to as "59A", both Ford AND Merc. DD |

Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
Find the numbers on the back area where the intake sits. My 53 EAC has a B. The head gaskets are Mercury gaskets so I think I am the first person to remove the heads.

Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
Those heads have 8CM markings,,,,that is the same heads on my 49 Mercury,,,,,,same color also .
Look on the rear flange of block where bellhousing mounts,,,,,should be some letters and numbers cast in there . It won’t tell much,,,, but it will give you a few clues . Tommy |

Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
I'll get all the engine parts and block together tomorrow and clean it up so I can find the markings and numbers Thanks for helping to track this engine down. Just looking at the crank, heads and block it looks like it might be worth having the block checked for possible use.

Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
Good deal,,,,,,the pics seem good so far .
My crank is good at .002 under,,,,,,yes,,,,,two under . My block would clean up at twenty over,,,,but I’m gonna bore it a little bit more . I plan on using the original heads,,,,,just because l have them,,,,why not . Tommy |

Re: Mercury Motor I.D.
I would think any flathead engine would be worth checking out.
