Re: Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
Surge brake system would be an option you can use if using the early wide 5 drums and backing plates. The brakes work by the force the trailer is pushing on the hitch the more pressure the more the brakes engage. Electric brakes take a special drum for the magnet to control the shoes and are 12 volt and need a controller to operate. And keep in mind the total weight of the trailer and cargo or curb weight is what determines the gvw . So if the trailer weighs 1000 pounds and the cargo weighs 2000 you will need brakes.

Re: Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
For years I towed a tandem axle car trailer behind a 4 cylinder Ford Ranger... The truck was way under what was needed in braking ability by itself... With a load on a trailer it was a recipe for disaster. By being constantly vigilant -but mostly lucky- I didn't have a problem. Turned out to be a bit naïve.
I would up one day having an emergency stop situation on the freeway with the same trailer, but with an ABS equipped Ford Explorer towing literally a ton... 60 to zero in a couple hundred feet. That was really scary. I was sure I was gonna buy someone a new car... Time stood still- made it OK. After that I installed electric brakes on one axle to compliment the surge brakes on the other axle. Karl |

Go for softer linings or fit a remote vacuum canister /power brakes .
