What is the difference between the left and right side brackets?

They need to be a mirror image due to the angle of the frame, while the tire is straight.

Look at the wheel mounting plate and the frame mounting plate to determine which side you have.

I thought the frame mounting bracket and the arm was the same for both sides. It was the piece (or plate) that has the 3 wheel mounting bolts on it was a left side or right side. It places the valve stem at 2:00 or 10:00.

Coincidentally today I fitted a left hand spare wheel bracket to my 31 pickup . I had several to choose from . I could not see any difference in the frame bracket all of them looked symetrical with no offset also the arm itself was dead straight also with no offset ,could be this is difficult to see so maybe there is a left and right . Some of the arms were off RHD cars with right side sidemounts If you look on the backside of the plate with the lug nuts on they will be marked "L" or "R" so you cant go wrong . My 28 brackets all look the same but on them the lugnut plate is not handed .

Which year? 28/29 are different than 30/31.

Jim,
If your car is a 28 or 29, like you avatar, the side mount brackets will fit either side. The 2 part 28/29 brackets allows a rotation to align the arm to the proper position. 30/31 side mount brackets have unique drivers side and a passenger side brackets - at least the part that the rim attaches to. Hope this helps.

30-31 are dedicated to either a R mount or a L mount.
The flat plate is stamped R or L.

Thanks for the replays. I'm not putting the side mount on my sport coupe. I have another car I am working on. Just exploring the possibilities. Jim

I misplaced info. from other posts about the '31 side mount bracket plates stamped rt and left. Mine are stamped but also have indents which I'm not sure face out or in towards the car. If looking from outside toward the body, the stamped left plate has a concave indent where possibly the arm bolt would sit in the indent. Is this correct? The indents are not uniformly cut as well. could these be repop's?

The slotted bolt hole indent in the plate faces outward . The slot hole should be uniformly cut or stamped . Repros are normally OK in this area maybe yours has been "modified" to get a spare to fit better .
