51 merc-ct has it. See if the pulleys line up. They must be off. Should be 1/2" clearance between the fan blade and the clip. If not, remove the fan assembly, loosen the 2 bolts holding the shaft and move out. Difficult to do with the assembly in the car. Let us know. Don't bend the blades like some have suggested. Lawson,
I know I am going to get into trouble on this post but if you admit you are not familiar with this car, why do you propose a fix that is crazy?
Sorry Lawson

I agree with ken of Ct. I changed over to the crab cap on my '48 Merc. Not only is there more clearance but tune ups take half the time.

Borrow a known good fan and try that. Could there be an adapter between the timing gear cover and the distributer? I have seen 3 bolt to 2 bolt adapters. Maybe the timing gear cover is not the right one, I think there might be more then one 2 bolt type covers if there is no adapter.

deuce roadster brings-up a very pertinent possibility...is there maybe one of these distributor adapters in place? I have one laying on the shelf somewhere that I seem to remember being 5/16"-3/8" thick. DD

update on Fan hitting Bale wire on distributor.
Our 47 Merc has a Fenton dual carb intake. Because of the 2 carbs, there was no room for generator in the middle where it would belong with a standard intake.
We chose to mount an alternator to the right side of the engine with a bracket that uses the head bolts. After adding the 2 carb intake the fan pulley and engine pulley were not in aligment. They were off about 1/4 " I took a 1/4 steel plate with 2 holes and used that between the fan mount and the intake. That 1/4 inch has rectified my problem of fan blade hitting the bale on the dizzy.
I tried removing the fan and mountm removing the 2 bots holding it in place, and moving the fan on the shaft, however there are 2 grooves on this shaft that prevent any fore or back movement.
Until I can figure this out, this is how I am driving our Merc.
Thanks for everybodies imput.

Not quite stock then.

Glad you were able to work out what the problem was, though.

Possibly grind 2 new grooves on the opposite side of the shaft in suitable location to correct problem.

Normally the fan would have mounted on the generator mounting bracket. The generator being removed took the OEM spacing away (the thickness of the generator bracket) unless it is still there to just support an idler pulley modification. If you are mentioning the two pinch bolts that hold the fan shaft to the slider bracket, the shaft is suposed to only be mounted in one location. It wasn't set up to move fore or aft any amount. I've seen modified shafts in custom installations. This is how a lot of AV8s were set up only they turned the fan adjusting bracket upside down & generally replaced it with the aluminum aftermarket bracket that slides on the generator stud.

If you change over to the crab cap on the 1946 - 48 Ford V8 would you have to change the ignition wire conduits, as the ends where the wires come out would be exposed for quite a length before they reach the crab cap.
