Default Fan Belt replacement

I'm replacing the fan belt on my '29 A. The old one had lots of cracks.
I loosened the generator, Its pushed up against the engine block. I have the new belt over the fan pulley and crank pulley. Its inches away from going over the generator pulley. Any tips? Do I need to get some kind of tool to stretch the belt out so I can get it over the generator pulley?
Thanks. I'm pretty new to the world of As.

Hmm, if the belt is a ways from going over the generator pulley with the generator completely loose, that would seem to me to indicate that you might have the wrong size belt. You should be able to easily remove/install the belt with the generator loose, and specifically you need to then be able to pull the generator some distance from the block and tighten it down while retaining 1/2" - 1" of play in the belt. Something is amiss here.

A good "cogged" belt readily available from your local parts store is a BX40. If it is too small try a BX41 or BX42. This belt works especially well on the smaller pulley of an alternator. Good Luck.

Remove the pulley from the generator... then put the pulley in the belt. The pulley should slip back on the generator or you have the wrong belt.

Kinda sneaky, but I've found that when you try to install the belt sometimes it doesn't get into the crank pulley because it gets caught between the pulley and the cross member. Hard to see, and the effect is that it appears the belt is too short. You have to force it onto the crank pulley.

Also, you might see how loose the "H" bracket is on your alternator. If it's way tight and canted too far outside the belt won't fit. If you loosen the "H" adapter and then use the prop that bolts to the front engine cover you may have some better luck. Then tighten the "H" bracket.

BTW, I use a BX40, the BX42 is too long. I find that the standard non-cogged belt available from the suppliers is too long to use on an alternator.

I have a generator, not an alternator. I did just install a new 2 bladed aluminum fan from Synders which is supposed to be a copy of the original except thats its aluminum.
Possibly my crank pulley is not original. Someone added a metal pointer and a mark on the crank pulley which I assume is to show TDC. Ill remove the generator pulley, place the belt on it and see if I can reconnect the pulley.

Have you compared the length of the new belt against the old one?

Yea I wish I had done that! It went in the garbage a week ago.
I'm also installed a new leakless water pump and I'm installing a new brassworks radiator. New gooseneck with a water temp sensor + gauge.

Pull the bolt that holds the generator on, slip the belt into the pulley, you can then work the bolt back in to mount the generator. Then set the tension, not tight but not loose. To tight causes problems.

When I had a powerhouse generator on my A I had to pull the mounting bolt out of the block, cock the generator slip the belt in the groove of the pully, then put the bolt back in, and then snug things down. If you got your parts from Snyders chances are you have the right parts.
